Audio format amplifies the ruminative experience of/through time. An incredible, must-listen audiobook.
Revisado: 12-01-24
As an audiobook, the unrelenting experience of duration that happens independent of the listeners effort adds a catalyzing component to this already generous, thoughtful, experimental and very successful book. The format amplifies the ruminative experience of/through time.
Reordering chronological prose in alphabetical sequence by beginning letters of sentences takes events of life away from their urgent contexts. You appreciate the contrasting shapes and iterations of the narrator’s speech gestures, such as observing, postulating, condemning, longing, appreciating, overthinking, interrogating, longing, doubting, self-flagellating, celebrating, longing, etc. This gallery of ruminations ends up greater than the sum of its individual parts. They describe/delimit the slipppery, complicated, ever shifting, ever constant shape of human consciousness through time.
It's a Top 3 audiobook for sure.

Historia
Our narrator should be happy, shouldn't she? She's young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate; she works an easy job at a hip art gallery and lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan paid for, like the rest of her needs, by her inheritance. But there is a dark and vacuous hole in her heart, and it isn't just the loss of her parents, or the way her Wall Street boyfriend treats her, or her sadomasochistic relationship with her best friend, Reva. It's the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong?

Historia
These nine stories of queer male intimacy brim with simmering secrecy, ecstasy, loneliness, and love in their depictions of what it means to be gay in contemporary Nigeria. A man revisits the university campus where he lost his first love, aware now of what he couldn't understand then. A daughter returns home to Lagos after the death of her father, where she must face her past—and future—relationship with his longtime partner. A young musician rises to fame at the price of pieces of himself, and the man who loves him.

Voice capable of reprogramming what is possible
Revisado: 10-28-23
arinze ifeakandu’s “what the singers say about love” is the first and black black queer love story of its kind i’ve ever read. i didn’t know we could tell stories about ourselves like this that weren’t scored by grief, or how much i needed to hear such a simple story of black queer love on a bodily, cellular level; simple as in complex but not obviously dysfunctional or self-destructive, about to implode. i have much more to say about each story—listen to and read this book!

Historia
In Like Life's eight exquisite stories, Lorrie Moore's characters stumble through their daily existence. These men and women, unsettled and adrift and often frightened, can't quite understand how they arrived at their present situations. Harry has been reworking a play for years in his apartment near Times Square in New York. Jane is biding her time at a cheese shop in a Midwest mall. Dennis, unhappily divorced, buries himself in self-help books about healthful food and healthy relationships.

Historia
Hailed as one of the world’s masterpieces of psychological realism, The Death of Ivan Ilyich is the story of a worldly careerist, a high-court judge who has never given the inevitability of his death so much as a passing thought. But one day death announces itself to him, and to his shocked surprise he is brought face-to-face with his own mortality. How, Tolstoy asks, does an unreflective man confront his one and only moment of truth?

Historia
From the author of The Remains of the Day, here is a novel that is at once a gripping psychological mystery, a wicked satire of the cult of art, and a poignant character study of a man whose public life has accelerated beyond his control. The setting is a nameless Central European city where Ryder, a renowned pianist, has come to give the most important performance of his life. Instead, he finds himself diverted on a series of cryptic and infuriating errands that nevertheless provide him with vital clues to his own past.

Historia
For more than four decades, Thomas McGuane has been heralded as an unrivaled master of the short story. Now the arc of that achievement appears in one definitive volume. Set in the seedy corners of Key West, the remote shore towns of the Bahamas, and McGuane's hallmark Big Sky country, with its vast and unforgiving landscape, these are stories of people on the fringes of society, whose twisted pasts meddle with their chances for companionship.

Big-hearted fugitive impressions of fugitives.
Revisado: 05-26-22
McGuane’s short stories are perfectly drawn with generous observations of remote settings and characters arising from those settings, whether in opposition to them or as a natural extension of them; characters who often live in some form of literal or figurative exile and may seem remote even to themselves. His situations swell, sprawl and vanish always leaving an undercurrent of deep-welled emotion. The audiobook format was also great since I think McGuane writes in relation to oral traditions of storytelling.
My favorites included: Cowboy (one of my favorite short stories period), Vicious Circle, Flight, A Man in Louisiana, Sportsmen, Riddle, North Country, On a Dirt Road, Motherlode, Tango, Kangaroo, Viking Burial.
Everything in Cloudbursts is worth the listen. Would highly recommend listening to this book, reading your favorites, and then all over listening again!
