toxic. and overly cruel
Revisado: 09-26-22
my original review, of this book wasn't accepted. have to come back to say. no to this book. the scene where the main villain takes that town with no resistance and uses a family in the most cruel way possible. just disgusting lazy writing. something you would see in GOT. what could be worse than a book written by r.r. Martin? how about a wanna be r.r. Martin.

M is a magician of modest wit, dim ability, and few scruples, who would prefer to spend his easy immortality drinking artisanal beer and making eyes at smiling women. Alas, in the infinite nexus of the universe that is New York City, equilibrium is no easy thing to maintain. Canal pirates, drug-induced divinities, pocket steam-punk universes, hipster zombies, ex-girlfriends, and the devil are all taken in easy stride.

lots of witty remarks and funny predicaments. tho can be serious at times.
the protag can be a bit frustrating tho. he can be a little too, idk what his character trait is. just that it can be a bit much sometimes. or it can be disappointing in others. which is why this book isn't 5 stars. that and now that I think about it. there is quite the pessimistic view on humanity that it kinda over shoved down my throat. I get it I get it. human=bad. sheeeeesh

great read and a satisfying story
Revisado: 09-15-22
great story. easy to keep up with characters. this is the first book I've listened too since finishing game of thrones. and I have to say this is refreshing to hear a story written by a competent author. for example, if this was written by r.r. Martin; our protagonist would have been raped tortured and killed. then after six books later of Cole trying to get revenge he would be raped tortured and killed by the antagonist. and then a few books later after raping and killing hundreds more the antagonist would die of old age content with a smile on his face.
that would have been how this book would have ended if it was r.r. Martin. but luckily Margaret mizushima has proved to be a brilliant author.
Nancy wuu is a good voice for females, but she does have trouble with male voices. but it's passable.
apparently this is the third book. this is the only of this story I've read and I don't think it's needed to listen to the befores. plus after listening to this I don't think I would even enjoy the first two. Maddie can be pretty disappointing In how she spends the ENTIRE book not letting anyone truly in emotionally and even at the end of the book she still didn't lmao! only just that she was taking a greater step towards letting Cole in. I found that to be bizzare, even with Previous trauma. seems like an adult could work thru the past with as much time and such a fulfilling career and a whole town that loves her like family. i don't have any of that and I've put a very hard past behind me.

if you're just looking for an easy not so committed series. then this and it's previous book will serve well.
the story was interesting enough, the characters tho seemed all one noted. idk what to think about the protagonist. I've never heard of redneck gay guy. and was disappointed that he was sub 6ft. it Always seems that. not every guy sub 6ft is gay but every gay guy is sub 6ft. it seems to be starting some kind of norm in story's and media. but anyway. it's a pretty good book. give it a listen and it will be worth that much.

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

if you're new to this series. seriously do not waste your money if. this series will hurl a never ending onslaught of rape and misery onto you. thru out ALL 5 BOOKS!
HUNDREDS OF HOURS! every character that you like or identify with will either be raped or murdered in the most cruel ways. unless your favorite characters are the ones who rape and murder. In which case this is the book for you. but seriously these books are easily a waste of money. you will get no satisfaction from r.r. Martins work. try the "sword of truth" series instead. a great mid evil story written by a great author. not this trash.

Years after his brother Bobby had him committed to a psych ward, Adam is ready to come to grips with who he is, to live his life on his terms, to find love, and maybe even use his magic to do some good. Hoping to track down his missing father, Adam follows a trail of cursed artifacts to Denver, only to discover that an ancient and horrifying spirit has taken possession of Bobby’s wife.

I actually like the book.
Revisado: 09-08-22
I think it's interesting and keeps your attention. it's honestly a good read. but I do have one greivance.
so when the book started and introduced our protagonist, he seemed to be a regular guy below 6ft and I was thinking cool, how refreshing. not every male protag has to be a 6ft plus god. like damn, but then he starts checking out a 6ft guy. -_- he's gay....
damn.......... it's like if your an avarage height guy your not a real guy. ur gay by default. dammmn. it's possible to be a guy and a hero and awesome and straight all while being less than 6ft. just saying. it's not like I'm homophobic. it's just it seems like everytime the protag is of average height he's gay.

could have been great
Revisado: 09-08-22
if it was written by a competent author. instead it's r.r. Martin. a disgusting, fat slob, ignorant, perverted, obese weasel, corrupted, waste of an author. he seems to have found the must unsatisfying conclusion to every single characters line. I have not be satisfied with any conclusion thru out this series. I wanted justice and got the 4th book in a row, all I've got was more rape and more betrayal. oh boy. just what I wanted to listen to. more. rape.
and when Jon snow resolved himself to leave the knights watch an go kill Ramsey. this really just doesn't flow well. so he gets the letter and is obviously troubled. Im pissed for him. and he decides to go fight and can even count on the wildlings to help. why the fuck would you even write the decision if your just gonna have the knights watch betray him 2 seconds later????? it's almost like you changed your mind. my guess is that it would have took to much effort for your fathead to create the necessary plot line for Jon snow. so you said eh never mind he gets stabbed in the back the end. how can you even be proud of that? especially after the red wedding? but you know what. I am disappointed that how things went for Jon. I'm greatly disappointed. BUT it's probably for the better because if he had gone. there was no way you would have wrote it well. he probably would have been so easily crushed and then Ramsey would flay and rape him I bet. seriously I honestly garuntee that's how you would have wrote it. cuz ur sick in ur fat head.

finally an author who can write fantasy
Revisado: 05-29-22
so many fantasy authors plague their art with perverse gluttonous amounts of sex scenes or use such a heavy hand when applying tragedies to it. i have been listening to game of thrones series and I was enchanted by such an interesting world and it's dynamics but so disappointed at it's relentless gloom and tragedies that I just could listen no more. and there are other fantasy novels I've had similar experience with. but this isn't one! the flow of this book is perfect leading into each point without delay or filler. there is tragedies but always a light at the end of the tunnel, a brave soul to stand defiantly against the darkness!!
a long, difficult, and weighty quest fulfilled! when delan got to hold theos again after he had been brought back to life?! that is what other fantasy authors cannot do! give life, meaning, and resolution! they cannot give light to their novels. but you have and you deserve all 5*'s. and herdon the great! what a comeback! when the king was so cruel to him at his lowest point he held himself high and embodied who he really is, herdon the great! i look forward to the next in this series. and I would like to honestly thank you, truly. I listen to audible at work and dark stories with no light darken my mood and ruin my day. but this novel held my interest gave me hope and a cast of deep characters I've come to know well. again I thank you.

there's no clash, there never will be either. don't waste your time people seriously,it's not to late to leave. if you want books similar but actually Worth your time. try "the call of agon" or the "Sword of truth" series. r.r. Martin will have every character you like or identify with raped or murdered or both in the most cruel ways. just go, get away from this series. for those who still buy this book
