Well done but nothing different than the rest of the genre.

I have long been a fan of O’Brien, Tull, Donachie in the like. I followed Captains Hornblower, Aubrey, Kydd, Ramage, Lurie and the whole gang for years. This work seems to be part and parcel of the same stuff, maybe not as well done. I could’ve use some more character development and although I am a big fan of John Lee he doesn’t do American accents well, they end up sounding kind of cringy. I’m not overly disappointed with this work it just didn’t raise the bar any from those previous authors I’ve mentioned, I don’t think it even meets the bar set by them.

I read and listen to a lot of audiobooks everything from sailing to warfare, I very rarely leave reviews. This book however is extraordinary in my opinion. Just the right balance of historical detail, plot, subplot, character development and twists and turns. Tackling issues like The relationship between man and the sea, PTSD, The monotony of combat operations, relationships in a military environment and the traumatic and brutal cost of warfare on the human psyche. Great action and a story which kept me riveted.
I always look forward to hearing Simon Vance narrate a book with English/UK characters.
I’m happy I came across this.
I recommend this audiobook.
