David Quammen is a fascinating writer. I love how he makes complex science understandable without editing out the complexity. Having him as a character and his encounters with scientists in the book adds interest and helps hold my interest. Though the narrator was excellent, the Audible recording had too much bass, making it hard to listen to the book in the car.

What a letdown! All the things I enjoyed about the other Charlie Bradshaw mysteries were missing from this one. This Charlie is a stereotype, afraid of getting old, grasping at tired tropes of masculinity to reassure himself, and afraid of women. There are none of the interesting character insights that made the others in the series special. The narration was another irritant.

Cliched plot, weak dialogue. Narrator didn’t help by giving the main character a breathy, wimpy voice.

If a mystery is this light, it needs to have engaging characters. None were evident after the first hour. I gave up.

What made the experience of listening to The Death and Life of the Great Lakes the most enjoyable?

This book knocked my socks off. It's an amazing story of how human actions have messed up the Great Lakes over two centuries. The research and reporting were peerless, the writing was gripping, and the characters encountered along the way were fascinating. I'll be thinking about this book for a long time.
