Historia
If you're a man of a certain age you'll know there comes a point in life when getting a sports car and over-analysing your contribution to society sounds like a really good idea. With a good job in sales and marketing and a nice house in Manchester that he shared with his wife and kids, John Bishop was no different when he turned the dreaded 4-0. But instead of spanking a load of cash on a car that would have made him look like a senior stylist at Vidal Sassoon, he stumbled onto a pathway that ultimately lead him to become one of the nation's best loved comedians.

I really didn't expect to cry.
Revisado: 12-01-14
If you could sum up How Did All This Happen? in three words, what would they be?
Prepare for tears.
Any additional comments?
I picked this after David Mitchell's Back Story which was equally entertaining. What surprised me, or maybe I just don't read that many autobiographies, was their views on the marriages and love - beats any wedding vows or romantic movie lines I have ever heard. Still a very good laugh and the pace was great and John's accent is wonderful.

Historia
Molly Murphy - now Molly Sullivan - is a year into her marriage, expecting her first child, and confined to the life of a housewife. She’s restless and irritable in the enforced idleness of pregnancy and the heat of a New York summer in 1905. So when a trip to the post office brings a letter addressed to her old detective agency asking her to locate a missing Irish serving maid, Molly figures it couldn’t hurt to at least ask around, despite her promise to Daniel to give up her old career as a detective. On the same day, Molly learns that five babies have been kidnapped in the past month.

Read Royal Spyness instead
Revisado: 03-29-14
Would you try another book from Rhys Bowen and/or Nicola Barber?
Yes, the Royal Spyness series is better overall.
Has The Family Way turned you off from other books in this genre?
No but it made me regret starting this series.
What about Nicola Barber’s performance did you like?
She was great and I like her accents. I don't know how accurate they are but her delivery is good.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Based on the sample reading, I started this series instead of Royal Spyness and I wished I had stopped at the 3rd book in this series. I was thinking she would stay independent, headstrong, and witty. Instead of pretending to be submissive to appease her husband, I think she becomes submissive with each book. I also find Molly's relationship with Daniel a bit unhealthy/abusive.
Any additional comments?
In the end, the amazing coincidences, the lack of common sense, and icky love story has made me stop with this series. However, I am so glad that I started Royal Spyness because I think Ms. Bowen can create great characters.

Narrator is superb and sets the bar so high.
Revisado: 02-21-14
Would you consider the audio edition of Gone with the Wind to be better than the print version?
Yes. Linda Stephens performance is amazing!
What did you like best about this story?
How much history and culture is in the book. I'm a Californian that moved to Tennessee and after watching Ken Burns Civil War documentary, I wanted to learn more. I read some Shelby Foote and after some internet searching, it was suggested I read Gone with the Wind. I saw the movie as a child and forever thought it was a romance novel. I was so wrong. There is a perfect mix of history, characters that reflect the sentiment of the time, and just good story telling.
What does Linda Stephens bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The narrator does an amazing job at crafting accents and actually acting out the characters. I usually cringe when listening to women trying to change their voices for the male characters and vice versa but Linda Stephens does it so well. Stephen Fry's reading of Harry Potter is on the same level. Unfortunately, everything else kind of pales in comparison to these performances.
Any additional comments?
Don't judge a book by its movie adaption.

Historia
This is the story of Michael Talbot, his family, and his friends: a band of ordinary people trying to get by in extraordinary times. When disaster strikes, Mike, a self-proclaimed survivalist, does his best to ensure the safety and security of those he cares for. Book one of the Zombie Fallout Trilogy follows our lead character at his self-deprecating, sarcastic best. What he encounters along the way leads him down a long dark road, always skirting the edge of insanity.

Tide me over until WWZ unabridged comes out.
Revisado: 07-24-12
This book helped fill the zombie book shaped hole in life after finishing WWZ. I bought the first 3 books of the series during the 3 for 2 sale and just bought the rest of the series today. It reminds me of the movie Zombieland, suspenseful and hilarious at the same time. I was concerned because I read reviews of the book and there were complaints about the writing - grammatical errors and made up words. It is not a problem in the audiobook since you are not seeing the words but hearing them and the narrator is GREAT! Also, I think it makes the story more believable. If someone found my journal during a zombie apocalypse I guarantee my spelling wouldn't be my first priority. Getting the thoughts on paper before I got eaten would be the main goal. My only complaint is that the sarcasm of the main character can get infuriating around the 3rd book in the series. However, I think this first book is a perfect balance of terror, suspense, humor, and kindness.

Historia
The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of 30 million souls, to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet.

Great book but wish the unabridged version was out
Revisado: 07-24-12
Great narrators and interesting story. I purchased it because I was curious as to why they were making a movie about it. Very enjoyable and I plan on buying the actual book since the unabridged version won't be out soon. In the meantime, I started the Zombie Fallout series and I like it better since it follows tradition storytelling as oppose to Word War Z with its compilation of interviews format. Again, highly recommended but with there was more.

Disturbing - ZERO STARS IF POSSIBLE
Revisado: 11-25-11
I picked this book because I really enjoyed Gone with the Wind and it was suggested to me by many websites as a similar listen. I did not expect the rape scenes to go into deep detail. I expect it in mystery and horror books but not in "period fiction". The result of the abuse weaves its way through a sordid story with uninteresting characters. I can understand conflict and I can understand the need to be authentic however, Gone with the Wind is so much better and there are no explicit violent scenes. It was as if I was watching a movie about an antebellum household and then, suddenly, a pornographic photo flashes across the screen - some details are just too much and do not match the tone or pacing of the book. I am still shocked at all the positive reviews. If you like watching Law and Order SVU for the horrible sick to your stomach feeling, then you might like The Kitchen House.
