It All Comes Together

The tangled web of conspiracies unwinds in this final volume. It’s a pretty good wrap up, though not as shocking in the action as Slave Ship. There’s still some good old bounty hunter back stabbing to go around.

Short and Practical

Content-wise it’s simple and straightforward advice, backed with sufficient data. There’s many useful tips scattered throughout the book too. I recommend for a no-no sense take on investing.

Good Story, Not so Good Performance

Story-wise, Rising Storm was quite the action-packed adventure. In this chapter of the High Republic epic, we see the Jedi pushed to the brink of breaking as yet another tragedy strikes the Republic. Unlike Soule’s Light of the Jedi, most of the heroes miraculously escape an early demise. Scott saves the shocker for the end, where he knows it will hit the hardest. And once the action started midway through the book, it didn’t let up until the final page. If you enjoy page-turners, twists, and cliffhangers, this is your book.

As for the performance, I found it to be way over the top. This is the first time I’ve listened to a Marc Thompson narration since the Thrawn trilogy, and he was overly dramatic with this one. I’m a firm believer in letting the reader and listener form their own imaginations based on the author’s written words, and unless it’s a script being read, I don’t enjoy narrators indulging in theatrics while narrating a story. The sputtering, the grunts, and the teeth-gnashing were unnecessary. The accents were mildly tolerable. In some cases they were too thick that I could barely understand what was being spoken. And when the action picked up, Marc’s excited exclamations got the better of him. In short his performance seemed more contrived than sincere.

I would still recommend this book, but I would stick to the printed version and pass on the audiobook version.

Exceptional!

I really enjoyed this audiobook. It’s a very engaging story that gives us the Ahsoka we all know and love, plus a few more characters to cheer for. E.K. Johnston has a knack for writing well balanced heroines. Definitely recommend this for Ahsoka fans. To me it’s required reading/listening to prepare for the upcoming Ahsoka series.
