A better-than-average male fantasy crime novel. If you’re a certain kind of guy, it’s got all the ingredients you’ll like: an ex-cop protagonist, Gus, whom everyone loves and respects, with a well-deserved excuse for self-pity and plausibly valid reasons to receive and inflict violence (on purpose or inadvertently), and the graphic descriptions of the torture and murder of women and children that are evidently a requirement for all crime novels these days. Gus also has a smart and beautiful ex-wife and an actress girlfriend who “looks like Marilyn Monroe” and loves Gus truly madly deeply. The reader, Keith Szarabajka, is excellent. However, If you are a woman (ahem), or a guy who enjoys more nuanced, challenging crime novels, you might want to look for something else -- you are not the "intended audience" for this book.

This would get my vote for one of the best audio books of the year (and I listen to a LOT of audio books). Can't-put-it-down story, just enough blood (but not too much), just a tiny bit of torture (seemingly a requirement for all crime fiction these days), humanely-drawn characters . A dash of humor and wit throughout. And the reader is absolutely perfect.

Extreme gore, torture, and abuse

Extreme violence and sexual abuse of women and children, plus detailed descriptions of torture -- and a likable little girl and adorable dog thrown in as palate cleansers between the scenes of gore. To me, this is just lazy, uninteresting writing driven by the easy shock "value" of ultraviolence. I like a bit of gore as much as anyone, but in small doses it can be more interesting and more shocking than lots and lots of goriness. The unknown and the unspoken can be way more terrifying. For example, see the movie "The Conversation" and the witty, character- and plot-driven crime novels of Adrian McKinty and Patricia Highsmith.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, because it's intelligent, witty, engaging, and the narration is perfect.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The characters were sympathetic, so I cared what happened to them. Also the writing was so witty and fun that I wanted to keep going -- was sorry when the book ended.

Have you listened to any of Gerard Doyle’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've listened to Doyle's performances of all Adrian McKinty's books. He has a beautiful voice and accent that make the performance a pleasure to listen to -- he makes each book come alive.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, because I wanted it to last a long time.

Any additional comments?

I wish all writers had McKinty's knack for knowing just how much blood-and-gore to include and how to draw characters that the reader cares about. He brings intelligence, wit, humor, and humanity to every book.

Story might be good, but didn't like narration

What did you like best about A Case of Redemption? What did you like least?

The story seemed good, but I had to quit listening early into it because of the narration.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Didn't make it to the end.

What didn’t you like about Kevin T. Collins’s performance?

The performance was "over acted" and rushed. Not natural. Too many frequent short breaths. (I thought breaths were typically edited out of today's audio books? I can't listen to ones where they're not. I become conscious of the breaths and they distract me from the story.)

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Maybe

Any additional comments?

I think the narrator has potential -- I just wish he would *relax*.

Another terrific thriller from McKinty

I've listened to McKinty???s ???Dead??? trillogy (???Dead I Well May Be??? is my favorite), and ???Fifty Grand.??? ???Falling Glass??? is another winner. All McKinty???s books have multidimensional characters and intelligent plots. ???Falling Glass,??? like the others, pulls you along with a fast-paced story, all-too-human characters, and???a key ingredient missing from many thrillers???wit. This book is the first of a series with a new protagonist, Killian, a former enforcer for the IRA, and I can???t wait to listen to the next book in the series. I hope it will be read by Gerard Doyle, who is the reader for all the other McKinty books I???ve listened to. Doyle is a terrific reader, perfect in every way.

Fascinating, witty, it-was-a-dark-and-stormy-night story; well-drawn world of London in the mid-1800s; interesting characters. And the reader is wonderful--made the characters come alive. One of those rare books that I think I probably enjoyed listening to more than I would have enjoyed reading.
