Thriller
Revisado: 03-03-20
To me a thriller is not the same thing as a perverted sadist story which I get no enjoyment out of reading. That’s what the beginning of the book was—I quit it because I don’t like hearing details of torturing people.

From the celebrated author of The Secret Life of Bees, a magnificent novel about two unforgettable American women. Writing at the height of her narrative and imaginative gifts, Sue Monk Kidd presents a masterpiece of hope, daring, the quest for freedom, and the desire to have a voice in the world - and it is now the newest Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 selection. Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.

One of my new favorites!
Revisado: 03-04-14
Would you consider the audio edition of The Invention of Wings to be better than the print version?
I would definitely think that the audio edition would be better due to the rich language and dialect by Adepero Oduye--masterful.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Invention of Wings?
All of it was memorable to me--I still can't get it out of my mind. I really appreciated the commentary by the author at the end which made me appreciate the story even more as I had not heard of the Grimke sisters historically.
Which scene was your favorite?
There were so many--Hetty finding her mom and a half sister is one.
If you could take any character from The Invention of Wings out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Hetty--to discuss the strength it took to live as a slave and yet have the perseverance to rebel and to remain human while being treated as no more than an animal.
Any additional comments?
I have recommended this book to many people--and suggested to them that the audio version would make it so much better.

Historia
Told through the voice of a woman with a powerful intellect that is maddeningly slipping away, Turn of Mind is not only a suspenseful psychological thriller that pulses with intensity but also a brilliant portrayal of the fragility of consciousness and memory, and of a mind finally turning on itself.

Touching story
Revisado: 03-04-14
Would you listen to Turn of Mind again? Why?
Perhaps. My dad has dementia and this book gave me insight into how life must be for him and therefore I could relate to this character.
What did you like best about this story?
Having various points of view to see the story in a three-dimensional way.
What does Jean Reed Bahle bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I tend to read books with various narrative voices in my head so I would get that if just reading it--in fact, I had the book and the audiobook and did some reading and some listening but I enjoyed her interpretation of voices which gave some dramatization to the book.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Not my kind of book
Revisado: 03-04-14
Would you try another book from Donna Tartt and/or David Pittu?
Probably would not read another of her books but would listen to his narration
What do you think your next listen will be?
I have downloaded Nora Roberts book
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
I did like the way the narrator was able to consistently maintain various voices throughout the book.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I was mostly disappointed at a book that has gotten such high accolades and on the best seller list for so long--kudos to the marketing people. After the main character's initial loss at the museum and going to live with his friend, I couldn't find much sympathy with him. I can't relate to drug addicts, fraud, theft, murder, etc. so pretty much his life was inaccessible to me.
Any additional comments?
Would not recommend to anyone. I only finished it because it was an audio book and I could listen in the car to pass the time--I would never sit down and read it.

Historia
When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

So disappointed in this book.
Revisado: 10-29-12
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Only someone from Britain--it is so totally British that I couldn't relate.
Has The Casual Vacancy turned you off from other books in this genre?
The author needs to stick with the genre she has mastered--if not Harry then some other fantasy.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Tom Hollander?
I couldn't even listen to all of it so I don' know.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment
Any additional comments?
After a few hours, I still couldn't get any point out of the storyline.
