Historia
This is the way the world ends—not with a whimper, but a bang. It was the only thing running through Cedrick Jonkheer's mind when the alien pylons made landfall. The Intergalactic Imperium used their right of Eminent Domain to appropriate the planet to build a goddamned highway… and all Jonx got was a sarcastic AI and some superpowers. The end of times came, and mankind was not prepared. He watched his world burn, then hid himself away at the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

A video game without the fun
Revisado: 07-21-24
This is the first book I've listened to where the character moves from one story to the next just to level up until the boss battle. And there was no unifying plot other than leveling up. I listened to too much before finally giving up. Two stars because the author finished and published it.

Historia
We humans like to think of ourselves as highly evolved creatures. But if we are supposedly evolution's greatest creation, why do we have such bad knees? Why do we catch head colds so often - 200 times more often than a dog does? How come our wrists have so many useless bones? And are we really supposed to swallow and breathe through the same narrow tube? Surely there's been some kind of mistake. As professor of biology Nathan H. Lents explains in Human Errors, our evolutionary history is nothing if not a litany of mistakes, each more entertaining and enlightening than the last.

Teetering on/off topic
Revisado: 02-21-21
I'm no expert, but (you might stop reading right there) discussions of genetics and evolution seem replete with assumptions of the "why." Why did this feature or bug - to use the author's language - persist while others did not? This book is full of those educated guesses, which left me feeling intellectually unsatisfied. To add some objective data to the story of our flawed genetics, the author often diverges into entertaining studies of the real-life repercussions. These often go on for quite some time, often to the point of distraction from the core subject. One example near the end of the book is the discussion of the many studies of how humans irrationally deal with sunk costs which was an example of... well, to be honest, it went on for so long I don't remember what point the author had been discussing. To paraphrase the author, an anecdote is much more powerful than data, a point he illustrates repeatedly.

Historia
This live performance of a powerful police procedural comes to life through the artistry of Celeste Lecesne and is accompanied by the original music of Duncan Sheik. Celeste portrays every character in a small Jersey Shore town as they unravel the story of Leonard Pelkey, a tenaciously optimistic and flamboyant 14-year-old boy who has gone missing. A luminous force of nature whose magic is only truly felt once he is gone, Leonard becomes an unexpected inspiration as the town’s citizens question how they live, who they love, and what they leave behind.

Mr. Lecense does a fantastic job with the voices and characters. I guess that's because he wrote it and performed it many times; none the less, it's powerful.

Historia
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

A bot who talks like a sarcastic human? Why not? I liked it, and the story moves along at a good clip. The performance was wooden at times, but Mr Free did a good job with the humor.

Historia
In modern, beautiful Green City, the capital of Southwest Asia, gender selection, war, and disease have brought the ratio of men to women to alarmingly low levels. The government uses terror and technology to control its people, and now females must take multiple husbands to have children as quickly as possible. Yet there are some who resist, women who live in an underground collective and refuse to be part of the system. Secretly protected by the highest echelons of power, they emerge only at night....

It seemed a little derivative of A Handmaids Tale, but I took a chance. Glad I did. The characters and story drew me in to the point that my attention didn't stray while listening. That's quite a feat!

Historia
Humans have kept honey bees in hives for millennia, yet only in recent decades have biologists begun to investigate how these industrious insects live in the wild. The Lives of Bees is Thomas Seeley’s captivating story of what scientists are learning about the behavior, social life, and survival strategies of honey bees living outside the beekeeper’s hive - and how wild honey bees may hold the key to reversing the alarming die-off of the planet’s managed honey bee populations.

More for the apiarist than the lay person
Revisado: 06-02-19
I was hoping for an interesting story of the honeybee in the wild, but this book is more for apiarists than the lay person. It lays out experiments and results in what I felt was excruciating detail, but the results don't help me understand the main character: the wild honeybee. Sure, I know higher hives are preferred (and smaller openings, and a very specific range of cavity size), but all those experiments are interesting to the apiarist only. It's a lot of knowledge that doesn't mean much to me. I know more details, but nothing meaningful.

Way too many words
Revisado: 10-10-18
I loved Cryptonomicon, but this narrative had too much explanation of how/why things were occurring. "He collapsed to his knees," became "he collapsed to his knees, remaining conscious to keep the shotgun barrel from touching the ground so that it wouldn't become plugged because...." That's more an example than an actual quote, but it's close. The performance was wooden. I much prefer William Dufris' delivery for Neal's style.

Light on content
Revisado: 04-27-18
As with most business books, 4DX contains a few gems buried in a mountain of words. One thing F-C does well is to go beyond theory into implementation. I do appreciate that. Regarding the performance, I find Mr. Covey's delivery to be condescending. Maybe it's how he goes breathy to emphasize importance, or maybe it's the occasional forced laugh; all I know is that I find his performance annoying. I wish F-C would hire a professional.
