I read more for style than content, and I truly regret that it has taken me many decades to read this book. Evelyn Waugh is a phenomenal writer!

Jeremy Irons meets the challenge of delivering equally in style and nuance. This is quite a match, and I can’t imagine a better overall audio book. And I have listened to hundreds.

An eye opener

OK, so somebody invented computers. Then the Web and social networks. But THEN what happened? What did these creations do to us? What have they done to our children? How can we begin to understand the influences driving the important life choices they are making? What does this mean to their future, to our world?

This is one thought provoking book. It's also fascinating, a page-turner Turner.

What made the experience of listening to Cutting for Stone the most enjoyable?

The style is impeccable and the twists of the story never cease, though everything comes together and makes sense.

The view into modern Ethiopian history and politics is a major plus.

Would you listen to Catherine the Great again? Why?

The writing is very clear and I got it the first time.

What other book might you compare Catherine the Great to and why?

Some of the histories by David McCullough. Well told stories and informative.

What does Mark Deakins bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Clarity and natural expression, rhythm.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I take joy in learning.

Any additional comments?

One thing I liked was the way the history was told within the context of other 18th century events in Europe. The scope if this book is quite broad, though, spanning virtually the entire century, and I'd have liked some more depth here and there. So I am left inspired to hear more.

3 narrators are very realistic without being overly dramatic.
