Historia
A moving coming-of-age story set in the 1900s, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn follows the lives of 11-year-old Francie Nolan, her younger brother Neely, and their parents, Irish immigrants who have settled in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Johnny Nolan is as loving and fanciful as they come, but he is also often drunk and out of work, unable to find his place in the land of opportunity.

A true and beautiful classic.
Revisado: 01-02-25
There’s a reason this book is known as a classic, maybe even a legend. It tells an amazing tale about a young girl and her family. About the difficulties they face: alcoholism, poverty, But beyond anything, this is a story about love, of family, of community, of life.
Francie Nolan wants an education and happiness. Not much to ask for an intelligent little girl, but it’s a struggle given her circumstances. Her aunt steps in to help when she can, and her father, for all his shortcomings, truly loved his children and did what her could for them. Still, he falls short, and life is not kind to him.
This is a story that rings true to life for the time it was written. I highly recommend it.

Entertaining and amusing cozy mystery
Revisado: 10-10-24
The Long Paw of the Law is a quaint mystery about a restaurant cook who finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery, trying to help the police find who killed her boss. It’s a clean cozy mystery with humorous characters and a handsome but slightly clueless police detective.
I listened to the Audible audiobook version and it was a fun book to listen to. The story is entertaining and most of the characters were amusing. The narration was clear if a little mechanical. Overall, it was a fun and interesting audiobook.
I received a free copy of this book from the author with no demands should I listen to it. I thank her for her generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.

Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

Profound and engaging!
Revisado: 03-02-24
What a rewarding read! It’s filled with heartbreak and misunderstandings, but it’s well worth investing time in it. The ending makes it all worth while.
Anna’s daughters, Meredith and Nina, have felt their whole lives as if their mother didn’t love them. Their father has insisted that she does, and that they need to listen to her tell them a fairytale. It’s a story that they’ve heard for years, especially when they were young, but they’ve never heard the entirety of the tale. All they know for sure is that their father is ill, dying, and he makes Nina promise that she and her sister will be open minded and listen. He assures them that their mother is broken due to things that happened in her past, and allowing her to share this narrative will bring them all closer.
This was a remarkable book, split between the early twenty-first century and WWII, specifically, the siege of Leningrad. As things unfold, a horrific and heart wrenching story unfolds that shows how staunch, determined, and devoted Anna was to her family. It definitely had difficult and sad moments, but it’s a tale well worth the time invested in reading or listening to it. Kristin Hannah offers another remarkable book that will keep you riveted, eager to see how things work out.
I will say that I found the first few chapters of the story slow going. I didn’t like the characters in those early pages, but as I kept reading, I softened. Without getting as far as the denouement, I quickly caught on to the difficult life Anna had faced and the grief she lived with afterwards. Along the way, the reader also views the lives of Meredith, her marriage on the verge of collapse, and Nina, a professional photographer, used to traveling the world, brought back home to come to grips with what she really wants in life.
I highly recommend this book. I listened to the audiobook. I found the writing profound and engaging. The narration was also remarkably well done. I highly recommend this book.

Delightful Historical Cozy Mystery
Revisado: 02-08-24
Lady Hardcastle and her companion Florence Armstrong, have moved to the country. They think they’ll find a quiet life, but almost as soon as they set foot into the area, things start happening. Before they know it, they’re involved in helping to investigate two very different murders. They have some previous experience with such things, but will the constabulary take them seriously? I mean, they are women, after all; what cam they possibly know about such things?.
This was a charming historical cozy mystery, and I can’t wait to listen to more books in this series. The writing was top notch, and the characters a delight. The plot was beautifully developed and executed. All in all, this was a jolly good read. I really enjoyed learning some of the backstory for Lady Hardcastle and Flo.
I listened to the Audible audiobook of A Quiet Life in the Country. I thought it was remarkably well narrated. Truly, I look forward to learning more about Lady Hardcastle, Flo, and their new friends and associates.
I purchased a copy of this audiobook from Audible or Amazon. I can’t remember which. In any case, all opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.

Both steamy and sweet
Revisado: 05-25-23
I listened to an audiobook of this trilogy. I enjoyed the story, but could listen to the narrator read the newspaper, a boring business report, or pretty much anything.. He’s that good.
These books are both sweet and hot. They revolve around true love and finding your soul mate, and good wins over evil.
There are some shipboard murders, BDSM, and multiple partners, if such things are important for you to know.
The writing is very good, but as I said, the narration is excellent. If I had a complaint about this book, it was the periodic intrusion of music into the narration. It didn’t help or add anything to the story.
I received the audiobook from the author for free. I thank her for her generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.

Jolene Hartgrave, here! I went from being a top dog lawyer to a hangdog pet psychic in the ruff part of town, all thanks to a pesky curse that gave me the gift of gabbing with animals. But my luck is finally looking up. I’ve teamed up with a hottie police officer and his snarky, overprotective German shepherd to catch criminals. From a murdered fashion icon spinning a web of lies to the killed curator of an occult museum, I’m doggedly helping the police bring the bad guys to justice.

Humorous and Fun Series
Revisado: 04-25-23
This is a delightful series. Each book is better than the one before as you get to learn more about the characters. If you enjoyed the Spells and Caramels series, you’ll find this one equally entertaining.
Jolene Hartgrave is in tough straits. A former lawyer, she’s lost her job. And worse, her magic, due to the effects of a curse. She’s trying to make ends meet by pretending to be a pet psychic, but in truth, she’s barely scraping along. When a police officer needs her help, and then offers her a job as a police consultant, she’s can’t say no.
The writing is filled with humor. The underlying theme of this book is about discrimination, for Jolene as a shifter isn’t considered as worthy as others. It’s something that reflects things going on in the real world today. This theme is handled with a light touch, but it’s there. It’s doesn’t diminish the fun of these books.
I loved the narration. The performance is done well and professionally. The characters are distinct and brought to life by Ms. Somerville who has the perfect voice for these books.. My only complaint is that there are a few mispronounced words, but it's easy to ignore them.
I enjoyed listening to this box set, and I highly recommend it. I look forward to the remainder of the books in this series.

A dazzling blend of alternative history and detective noir, with just a dash of fairy tale. A missing child in a small Transylvanian town could spell trouble for Hungary’s new revolutionary government. Another case for Ferenc Marlowe, pioneer private detective. Soon Marlowe is on an undercover mission to the Carpathian Mountains, where he must contend with the local nobility, Jesuit intrigue, and woods that are full of wolves...or something worse.

Decent Story, Lesser Narration
Revisado: 01-19-23
This is a decent story, but it really would be beater to read the first book in this series before jumping into this one. I did not. Still, after the first half hour or so of listening to this audiobook, the background became unnecessary to understand the tale unfolding. It’s not a story I’d been familiar with before beginning this audiobook.
Ferenc Marlowe is a private investigator in 17th century Eastern Europe. He’s gone undercover as a Chasidic Jew to join a contingent of clerics from various religions trying to solve the disappearance of a missing girl. In doing so, they hope to avoid an armed confrontation. Ferenc is woefully unprepared for the position he’s in, amid anti-Semites. The Jew haters want to blame the girl’s disappearance, and likely death on Ferenc. He, with the help of another in the group do their best to figure out what happened to her while remaining alive themselves.
The book was interesting. My biggest complaint about it was the narration. Many of the voices sounded the same, and so many words were mispronounced. Really, the narrator put little work into preparing his performance of this book. These short comings drew me out of the book and made me delay listening to it. It’s unfortunate.

Albert and Rex and another murder investigation
Revisado: 12-31-21
Albert and Rex make another stop on their culinary tour or England, this time to Bedfordshire for a class on making clangers. While there, they’re pulled into yet another murder investigation, and find themselves trying to clear the name of a young woman, the girlfriend of the man killed. Albert finds himself taking care of not only Rex, but also a snarky dachshund who belongs to the young woman.
The author is drawing the storyline of this series together by continuing to involved a behind the scenes mafia-like character who’s behind these murders. It will be interesting to see how this develops in future books.
This book involves not only murder, but kidnapping, employee one-upmanship and dissatisfaction, and dogs’ jealousy of each other.
I listened to the audiobook version of this and loved it. It’s well-written by the author and perfectly performed by the narrator. It had me chuckling out loud more than once. The antics of the dogs and Albert’s sleuthing are phenomenal.
I highly recommend this book and the entire series.

Revisado: 12-17-21
Albert and Rex are at it again. They’ve traveled to Stilton, England to attend the Stilton Festival and learn about the famous cheese. No sooner do they arrive than they’re drawn into an investigation of the theft of the town’s full inventory of its cheese. What’s to happen to the festival? Then things escalate, and Albert and Rex are deep into discovering who’s behind the robbery.
I absolutely love Albert and Rex. They never fail to entertain and inform. There are points where they make me laugh out loud, and others where I’m intensely concerned for their well-being. Most of all, I can’t wait to see how they work together, without being able to communicate, to solve the crime.
The writing is fast paced and snappy. I listened to the audiobook, and the narration is perfectly matched to the book’s intent. The narrator’s performance never leaves you guessing about which character is speaking. The voices he’s created are perfectly matched to the written character.
I highly recommend this book, and the entire series. I can’t wait to read more about Albert and Rex.

When Patricia returned the missing sapphire of Zangrabar, she had no idea the maharaja would consider himself eternally in her debt. Hardly surprising then that she has been invited to his son’s coronation as the new maharaja. There’s intrigue and mystery afoot, though. The Marahaja’s invite suggested he had a mystery for her to solve, but in true Patricia style, it’s nowhere near that simple.
