Don’t get me wrong. I love this series. That said, Ms Porter brings every single character to unique life!

This series got me more interested in the history of Scotland AND the early history of the U.S. Here’s hoping that we don’t have to wait too long for the next installment. <3

Murderbot is my snarky AI hero. I also really enjoy Art. I probably should have relistened to 7 before this, but it didn’t matter that much. And Kevin R Free’s narration is exquisite. I especially live his interpretations of Murderbot’s exasperated noises.

Dear Martha: MORE!!!

More of a character study than a story.

*Possible spoilers - for a non-story*

Vivian is a bizarre woman. Her fascination with language is interesting but her endless listing of things grows tiresome. There’s never a real explanation if why she and her sister have the same name or how she ended up living with their great aunt. While we get a tiny glimpse of her childhood trauma near the end, there’s not enough to make the story feel like even that was the point. She’s collecting unemployment and supposedly had a job the previous year, but we never find out what she did for work then. Her friend ‘Penelope’ is somewhat of a good enigmatic match for her since she too is quite odd and learns to play along with Vivian’s changeling fantasies, right up until the unsatisfying end, which tidies up nothing.

Childlike telling of an intriguing series of events

Sally Jones narration of the story's series of events uses some sophisticated language, but with a somewhat childlike viewpoint. Some of the mystery's revelations were a long time telegraphed before she puts things together for herself. Still. I like the approach for middle and high school readers.
