I love this guy's Podcast and YouTube channel. It has really informed me about a topic that not enough people know about nowadays. It also makes me proud of my own ancestors who came to this country from Britain. I drive for a living, and many a long day these episodes have kept me entertained. You are doing a great service to the history of your country, sir. Keep it up!

I enjoyed this way more than some book written from an officer's point of view. This war diary and the comments, written by the sailor's nephew, tell you more about the course of the war for the British and what it would have been like for a real sailor. Painting the ship, gun practice, long watches, escorting deserters and spending your pay on shore leave. All the while, the Royal Navy makes sure the Uruguayans and Argentines don't swing towards Hitler, then escorting troop transports up to reclaim North Africa from the Italians. An angle on the war most people miss. Just goes to show: sometimes the important jobs aren't the ones that get all the glory. Well done!

Lots to criticize in the content of this book. The epilogue states the deaths, if taking into account the wounded who died after the fact, reach "conservatively" 100,000. That is ridiculous. If every wounded American and every American POW died it would have been not even 20,000 dead.
Also, it was extremely biased against the British (I am American). The kind of atrocities it shows the British simply did not happen. Wars, then as now, had as much to do with public opinion and winning moral victories more than strategic ones. This was already an unpopular war with the English people; if word had gotten out that Redcoats were galavanting about killing women and children, the war would have been over right then. Not even the Hessians were even close to as brutal as they British are betrayed in this book.
Those are my two main gripes with this book. It acts like it's trying to be all authentic and show the war in a gritty way; really it's just as absurd as anything that's ever been put out. That's a real shame, because the actual War for Independence is a fascinating and riveting topic. It was a civil war, where about 1 out of every 5 people was an active Loyalist. There were battles that were fought completely between Americans with almost no British involved. Continental soldiers joined up for large cash bonuses and the promise not land, effectivley moving up a social class. Slaves joined the British to gain their freedom. Tell that story!
You can make the excuse that it is a childrens' book. Well, you should take even greater care to be accurate about important things. I hate it when people make up this silly American mythology that is so far from what really happened. The truth is interesting enough. Tell that!
