Historia
In In Order to Live, Yeonmi Park shines a light not just into the darkest corners of life in North Korea, describing the deprivation and deception she endured and which millions of North Korean people continue to endure to this day, but also onto her own most painful and difficult memories. She tells with bravery and dignity for the first time the story of how she and her mother were betrayed and sold into sexual slavery in China and forced to suffer terrible psychological and physical hardship before they finally made their way to Seoul, South Korea - and to freedom.

RAW determination
Revisado: 11-29-24
What an incredible journey this woman has shared with us. Her will to live and to be free under such dire circumstances is not only awe inspiring but truly mind numbing how humans can be so cruel to one another.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Historia
Alexander was born into the royal family of Macedonia, the kingdom that would soon rule over Greece. Tutored as a boy by Aristotle, Alexander had an inquisitive mind that would serve him well when he faced formidable obstacles during his military campaigns. Shortly after taking command of the army, he launched an invasion of the Persian Empire, and continued his conquests as far south as the deserts of Egypt and as far east as the mountains of present-day Pakistan and the plains of India.

Good Read
Revisado: 09-12-24
I really liked this book because it shed light on someone I’ve often heard about but nothing nothing about him besides his military prowess. An interesting person and his military exploits are fascinating. It is also interesting how events or discoveries thousands of years ago are ever present in one form or another today, meaning there impact.
The reader does an excellent job, enjoyable to listen too.

Historia
The war on the Eastern Front from 1941 to 1945 was the bloodiest combat theater in the bloodiest war in history. Oberleutnant Friedrich Wilhelm Sander experienced this bloodshed firsthand when serving with the 11th Panzer-Regiment. This regiment made up the core of the 6th Panzer-Division, one of Hitler's top armored formations, which was involved in most of the major campaigns on the Eastern Front; campaigns such as Operation Barbarossa and Operation Winter Storm.

Candid and unfiltered
Revisado: 04-09-24
I really enjoyed this book, it is seemingly open and unfiltered. The author doesn’t hide his opinion, and why shouldn’t he, it’s his personal diary. I am eager to listen to our enemies thoughts and observations. It amazes me how different we are and at the same time…so similar. I do not sympathize with Nazi dogma, but the soldier is entirely relatable.
Good read.

Historia
Almost all accounts of D-Day are told from the Allied perspective, with the emphasis on how German resistance was overcome on June 6, 1944. But what was it like to be a German soldier in the bunkers and gun emplacements of the Normandy coast, facing the onslaught of the mightiest seaborne invasion in history? What motivated the German defenders, what were their thought processes - and how did they fight from one strong point to another, among the dunes and fields, on that first cataclysmic day?

Enemy perspective
Revisado: 02-19-24
It always fascinates me to hear the enemy combatants point of view. Also, as an American, I find it intriguing how time separates some of us from our ancestors, some of us are German, Italian, Polish, Russian, etc. Were our enemies distant relatives? Something to ponder…

The culture of “safety” and its intolerance of opposing viewpoints has left many young people anxious and unprepared for adult life. Lukianoff and Haidt offer a comprehensive set of reforms that will strengthen young people and institutions, allowing us all to reap the benefits of diversity, including viewpoint diversity. This is a book for anyone who is confused by what’s happening on college campuses today, or has children, or is concerned about the growing inability of Americans to live and work and cooperate across party lines.

I’ve been to China and Taiwan and to both Mao’s and Chang’s tombs. All without knowing about either of their struggles in the Chinese civil war or with the Japanese.
This book should be required reading so our younger generation can know who Mao is and what we as a nation face(adversary).

Historia
In 1307, as they struggled to secure their last strongholds in the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Templars fell afoul of the vindictive and impulsive king of France. On Friday, October 13, hundreds of brothers were arrested en masse, imprisoned, tortured, and disbanded amid accusations of lurid sexual misconduct and heresy. They were tried by the Vatican in secret proceedings. But were they heretics or victims of a ruthlessly repressive state?

Enlightening
Revisado: 01-31-23
Im not sure what to say about this book or more accurately, the material it covers. The performance is spot on, the story is intriguing. That leaves the writing both well done and left me wanting to listen more.
I guess I’m one of those people that didn’t know a whole lot about the Templars but had a positive image in my mind. This book has truly enlightened me and subsequently changed my perception of what they were.
Hind sight is 20/20 as they say, but it’s astonishing to me that they did what they did and when they did it. For example fighting a Muslim army when they were clearly at a disadvantage and grossly outnumbered, to attack would mean death, yet that is what they did. It served no purpose other than it met their code.
Foolishness, bravery, wealthy, Pius and greedy all come to mind when talking about Templars. I’m glad I chose this read, definitely a good book to read.

Historia
Near the end of World War II, thousands of Allied ex-POWs were abandoned to wander the war-torn Eastern Front. With no food, shelter, or supplies, they were an army of dying men. The Red Army had pushed the Nazis out of Russia. As they advanced across Poland, the prison camps of the Third Reich were discovered and liberated. In defiance of humanity, the freed Allied prisoners were discarded without aid.

Shocking...
Revisado: 11-03-22
It's shocking at how bad Allied Intel was at times and on the flip side of that coin, how good it was. At it's worst, it was heartbreaking and maddening. I've read plenty on Stalin and how the Russians won their part of the war and it is nothing short of amazing considering how things ran inside Russia...suspicion around every corner and behind every shadow, purging their own officer core, etc, how we ever trusted anything they ever said(especially POW arrangements) is baffling. I'll chalk it up to hindsight being 20/20. Excellent story, worth the read.

Historia
As Adolf Hitler and the Nazis seduced a nation, bullied a continent, and attempted to exterminate the Jews of Europe, a small number of dissidents and saboteurs worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the inside. One of these was Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor and author. In this New York Times bestselling biography, Eric Metaxas takes both strands of Bonhoeffer's life—the theologian and the spy—and draws them together to tell a searing story of incredible moral courage in the face of monstrous evil.

Inspiring
Revisado: 10-01-22
I am inspired by this reading, I’ve read several other books on the resistance and Dietrich‘s name was mentioned in those as well, albeit short references. Still, I had to read about this man that was being praised. I am so glad I did! I grew up in the church but eventually faded away because so many put the institution before Christ. Dietrich Bohoeffer always put Christ first, even in the face of death. A true inspiration.
