Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Incredible book!
Revisado: 01-13-23
I knew within the first 20% of this book that it would be my favorite book I would read this year, and it’s only January.
It was so witty and heartfelt, and it was written so well and in such an interesting way, especially with the different points of view, including the personification of the dog! I also appreciated how the social issues of gender inequality and the judgements of unwed mothers were described so poignantly; in a way that you got mad or emotional for the characters and rallied for them to succeed.
I want to recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I will continue to think about this book long after finishing it!

Historia
Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz. Now 15 and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married. But little by little, injustice by brutal injustice, the Nazi occupation takes hold, and Alina’s tiny rural village, its families, are divided by fear and hate. Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears.

This story was so moving and so emotional. It had mystery and love and history all woven through the tale that spanned throughout geography and time and multi generations. Highly recommend if you enjoy historical fiction of WWII and true love.

Anna Fox lives alone - a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times...and spying on her neighbors. Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, mother, their teenaged son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn't, her world begins to crumble. And its shocking secrets are laid bare.

STICK WITH THIS BOOK! slow start but gets GOOD!
Revisado: 07-11-18
Yes, a few reviews indicate it takes a while to get through this book. But it turns around about 10% in, and everything you THOUGHT you knew about the characters and the plot constantly changes!! Stick with it. The story is told through first perspective, and by someone suffering with mental disorders, so one must be patient. Hearing this book as an audiobook is a very sensory experience, with so many descriptions of sound, feelings, taste, sight, and emotions. I was very pleased with the twists and turns of the plot. At the end, it causes you to think about parts of the story and try to re imagine everything you first thought with the knowledge of what you learn throughout the story.

Unique perspective of WWII
Revisado: 05-18-18
This was an interesting story, with a totally different story line than most historical fictions set in Germany/France during World War II. A few times during the two character's story-telling I was brought to tears because of what they were experiencing. The only thing I didn't like was one of the main characters was so childish and immature that I couldn't help being annoyed or angry with her in the choices she made. (but of course, being young and naive is a realistic trait that the author portrayed accurately for a character that age) . I liked the way everything wrapped up in a nice conclusion at the end---so often books end with loose ends. The way it all ended was tragic yet poignant, so it definitely tugged your heartstrings and stays with you after the book is over. However, the story doesn't keep you hooked at the edge of your seat the whole time like other books, but was still interesting enough to finish it.

Great story with twists and turns!
Revisado: 04-11-18
What did you love best about Dead Lie Down?
The story line and the interesting twists and turns were great, especially the psychological mystery. The narrator's voice was pleasant as well.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Although I've read a lot of Sophie Hannah's stories, it's tough to pick a favorite character! I'm very familiar with Charlie and Simon, but I'm not truly fond of either of them in particular. I tend to enjoy the characters they interact with the most. In this story, I was intrigued by Mary Trelis (even though she is not by any means "likeable") and I liked Ruth... but I was a little disappointed in Ruth's opinion of her morality-- she thought she was nothing like her parents but she had a similar way of placing judgement on moral topics that she deemed "right" or "wrong". I also really liked Saul because he was a sweet, protective, grandfather type.
Have you listened to any of Elizabeth Sastre’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
First time I heard this narrator (and my first audible book) and I liked her voice.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Layers and layers of gripping psychological discoveries!
