Fun book if you can get past the narration. It's stilted, and she ruins perfectly good sentences.

She portrays herself as a victim, and yes, Playboy culture victimizes women, and so did Hefner. But why, in God's name would any woman stick around as the "girlfriend" and then "wife" of a man who regularly has sex with numerous other women and treats them all like sh*t? Because she wanted a centerfold, a modeling career, to live in the mansion (which sounds like a hellshish experience)? I get that society still makes women feel that their worth is their looks, but most women, even those as beautiful as she apparently is, do other things with their lives instead of doing what Hefner wants just for, what, exactly? I realize I will be called unsympathetic, but I know many beautiful women who have ZERO interest in being invited to the Playboy mansion. Sorry.

I expected something a bit more realistic and gritty. One reviewer said it is "hugely atmospheric." I hoped to learn more about the real undocumented experience in NYC Chinatown, or the former one-child policy. What I got is a not very well disguised romance or YA novel. The writing is unsophisticated and the characters generic. This should have been published by Harlequin.

This book presented itself as sympathetic to colonized people, but there was a LOT of White Man's Burden attitude here. Not to mention that a woman in that time would NOT have said that something was "impactful." The noun "impact" did not morph into an adjective until the 21 century. And... in the circle of communist nationalists why was there no mention at all of Ho Chi Minh?

The alleged "twists and turns" were silly and just seemed like the author was trying to one-up herself with each one. I got bored.

A sanitized view of the Japanese in WWII.

As a retired history teacher and avid reader of WWII books, both fiction and non-fiction, I found this to be "Japanese occupation light." What they did to many, many nurses (Singapore?) when they took the area was incredibly brutal. I know that there was disease and starvation, and that killed a lot of POWs, but they were far more horrific than that. Plus, it read like a romance novel with all of the love stories neatly tied up. Life is not like that, and WWII sure wasn't.

I'm not sure what I was expecting. A story maybe? A plot of ANY kind? What I got was a disjointed jumble of scenes about really uninteresting people. It was poorly written too.
As someone who has lived in Chicago, NOT the burbs , and has worked in restaurants for many years I was expecting something different. Very boring.

If I had gotten this from the library I would have brought it back after the third chapter. But, since I bought it, I read it.
The plot was convoluted and the dialogue laughable.

It's not that I am incapable of reading a romance novel. I have found some to be fun. But this one was predictable at every turn, and the dialogue was downright embarrassing.

Sorry folks, but I need more of an actual plot to keep me engaged.
