Meh... unclear audience. Probably better in print.

Background, I have danced recreationally since I was 15, and every now and then try to pick up some book or article about new diet/meal plan ideas and conditioning exercises. It is usually with low expectations and therefore I shouldn't judge this book too harshly. I mean, it does exactly that, provides some meal plans and exercises.

However there seems to be a lack of focus or intended audience, as the book tries to provide inspiration for college-aged dancers, pre-tween pre-professional bunheads, busy moms of three who want to fit into smaller jeans... all based off of a professional dancing who practices 8hr/day at least and notes "my body has always moved with ease". I felt it tried too hard to reach as broad a reader profile as possible and came off as thin or unrealistic.

The exercises are all floor barre and a typical ballet barre. For the college dancer or tween aspiring ballerina, this is all unnecessary and simplistic, and for the person trying to get fit and no background in dance probably a little hard to follow (although explaining those movements solely with words ain't easy!). Furthermore, if the intention of the book is to teach non-dancers how to carve out a ballet body, a good diet and just doing barre exercises isn't going to get you there.

Diet info is all standard. Good tips if you've NEVER looked at a cookbook or clean eating magazine article. Personally as a vegan, I would have liked to see SOME mention of plant-based proteins and alternatives.

Probably the biggest issue however is the format--this book really ought to be read considering the number of diagrams and tables that are included in the PDF. It's great that the PDF is available, but I assume the reason most people listen to audiobooks is because they aren't able to read something at the moment. Even as someone who has done barre for years, I found it hard to follow or stay focused. Pretty good narrator though.

I also would feel remiss without noting that I really admire Misty Copeland and the outreach work she has done, as well as the inspiration she brings to non-white young ballet dancers.

This audiobook is really just an advertisement for their SYMBIS program, very little actual content. Also necessitates that the listener is a person of the Christian faith, as many stories reference the Bible or good Christian families. I feel that the synopsis and other reviews commit a huge oversight by not mentioning this.

Disclaimer: I've never been much of a "girly girl," always rolled my eyes at chick flicks and chuckled at the covers of romance novels. But I was curious to try one at some point, and yes my boyfriend broke up me and I was frustrated. So take my review with a grain of salt, but I'm going back to eye-rolling and snickering.

First, predictable and repetitious. Sure, you know what is going to happen, if you wanted a mystery you would read a mystery. Of course you know that the chick is going to get the hot dude and that there will lots of sex, that's why you're reading this. But come on, how many times do we need to hear the same things happening again? I also thought the book began a bit abruptly--two sentences in and said chick is already in close quarters with said hot dude, who is already eying her thighs.

Next, the unhealthy nature of the "relationship." I know a lot of folks have enjoyed the "50 Shades" series, but I am personally annoyed and offended by the heroic portrayal of women being taken advantage of. Much of the book I was frustrated Joss' almost-attempts at standing up for herself, thinking "finally, don't take that sh*t, that-a-girl" until she yet again melts before the handsome douchebag. Telling her that she can't wear short dresses out in public because he doesn't want other men to see her taking pride in her body, can't wear her hair down because he doesn't want other men to see how nice it looks.... little red flags anybody?

Not to mention, Barbie and Ken? Of course the hot dude is going to be mid/late-twenties, handsome, extremely well-muscled, rich, smart, charismatic... of course. But when the author started describing Joss as looking more "plain," enjoying a "casual" appearance I cheered. Why, Joss even calls herself short! She even picked fun at the blonde bimbos. Cool, a "normal" heroine! But apparently looking "plain" means having fantastic hair, great legs, and jugs for boobs. Oh, and 5'6" is "short." [Need I comment that this 5'2" reviewer snorted in disgust at all the times Joss complained about her height?]

Am I just an insensitive, hard-to-please, fault-finding reader? Maybe. If your personality more closely matches that of the other reviews, hey you might enjoy the book, to each his own. But if you're newer to this genre and saw that this was ranked as a top novel, I would recommend trying to find something else.

The audiobook's redeeming quality was the accents. I thought the narrator did quite a good job impersonating the accents for the characters, though I am a sucker for Scottish and Irish accents. I almost wished that Joss' character had been Scottish too, so that the whole novel would have been read with such a delightful accent.

Never before have I so thoroughly enjoyed reading about materials science, manufacturing, and ecological issues!

This book is packed with information about the development and impact of plastics within the past few decades, drawing from research articles, interviews, and site visits. The facts and views presented are sufficiently technical to ensure one's trust in the objectivity of the topics, as well as maintain the interest of an engineer or enthusiastic hobbyist; still, in no way did I find the writing to be difficult for any layperson to understand. As a mechanical engineer myself, I found I still learned a great deal about different kinds of plastics and their post-consumer roles.

But perhaps more importantly, I found the author's writing to be delightful. Susan playfully weaves a quirky narrative about her journey to dissect the plastics world, enlivening the technical topics. The narrator also speaks so comfortably and easily that I would have thought that she wrote the text herself, truly capturing the author's fun spirit.

If you are an engineer, designer, or some other professional in the consumer goods industry, read this. If you are interested in environmental debates, read this. If you are simply interested to learn how, in only a few decades, we came to live in a plastics-filled world, read this.

I bought this book with an interest in learning more about the theory behind performance studies. I am considering a potential career in performance arts but with a late start in the field, so I thought it would be worthwhile to do some "homework." That said, I had already taken a course in college a number of years ago intended as an introduction to performance theory.

I have given up only an hour into the book. While the material is indeed dry, I assumed I wouldn't be too daunted by the content and analytical writing; seeing that I am incorrect, I would NOT attempt this book if not seriously studying performance theory for a degree. The narrator also makes the material seem drier, as he drones on endlessly in a monotonic [and annoying] voice.

The review on the book itself claims that it is a useful text, but again I think it would only serve someone who is working on a doctorate in performance studies.

I really did want to like this book. With an interest in Asian language and culture, I found the post-apocalyptic Thailand backdrop to be quite compelling. I liked the author's writing and felt that, while the cast was indeed large, I did care what would happen to the characters. The reader gave a wonderful performance, impersonating a wide range of voices from that of a shrewd American businessman to a young Japanese woman.

What kept me from finishing the book was the intense and endless depiction of violence. I know that I am more sensitive to violence than many, but I was still surprised that this was not mentioned at all in any of the other reviews. The book began right from the start with a gruesome factory accident and brutal sexual assault and never subsided. While I can tolerate some violence, I felt that the explicit descriptions of pools of blood and mutilation were unnecessary and far too copious. At least with a printed book I could have glossed over those paragraphs and potentially continued to read, but I constantly felt nauseated while trying to read.

After struggling with over 1/3 of the book--compelled to read on because of the unique story--I finally couldn't take it any more. I would assume that for the average reader this book should be tolerable, but a word of caution for those more sensitive to explicit depictions of gory violence.
