Christians should have the answers, shouldn't they? Depression affects many people - both personally and through the ones we love. Depression is not new, though. Indeed, the "Prince of Preachers" C.H. Spurgeon struggled with depression and talked openly about it. Here, Zack Eswine draws from Spurgeon's experiences to encourage us.

A great comfort to those who suffer
Revisado: 12-30-23
Spurgeon’s suffering and insights are described with honesty, clarity, and kindness.
I have several people in my life (including myself) who suffer from depression and other forms of anguish. This book helped me better understand the experience, and be more compassionate.

Historia
From the outside looking in, the young life of Mia Döring seemed unremarkable, as she pursued her studies at a prominent Dublin art college. Unbeknownst to those around her, however, Mia's life was anything but ordinary. At age 16, she had been sexually exploited by an older man, which carved a direct path into the Irish sex trade, where she remained for several years until finally leaving it behind over a decade ago, at age 24. In her literary memoir, Mia excavates her difficult history as she sets about integrating her past with her present-day life.

Heavy lifting, worth the effort
Revisado: 05-30-23
This is an incredibly important and difficult book. It is well written, eye-opening, and deeply disturbing. Mia Döring details her experience as a sex worker with unflinching clarity. The details are explicit without being prurient. She narrates in a clear, calm voice that belies the horror of her experience. I applaud her courage in writing this account.
I had to listen to this book in short segments because I was overwhelmed with grief on Mia’s behalf, and for all women ensnared in similar situations. Nonetheless, I’m glad I listened to this book; I would encourage anyone to listen or read, and be prepared to do some emotional heavy lifting.

Historia
The Pleistocene spans a period from around 2.5 million years ago (mya) to just over 12,000 years ago, and it was an epoch of enormous change on Earth, mainly characterized by climate changes involving fluctuations between periods of extreme heat and long periods of glaciation. This period is commonly known as the Ice Age, despite the fact there were actually a number of separate periods of cold. The Pleistocene Era: The History of the Ice Age and the Dawn of Modern Humans looks at the development of the era, what life on Earth was like, and the origins of archaic humans.

Revisado: 04-09-21
Ok if this is your first book on this epoch, but otherwise not especially deep or thorough. I was particularly unhappy with the overuse of the phrase “would have” in the chapter on human evolution, which presents speculation as if it were factual certainty. As a scientist, I found this very off putting.

In his most provocative and practical book yet, one of the foremost thinkers of our time redefines what it means to understand the world, succeed in a profession, contribute to a fair and just society, detect nonsense, and influence others. Citing examples ranging from Hammurabi to Seneca, Antaeus the Giant to Donald Trump, Nassim Nicholas Taleb shows how the willingness to accept one's own risks is an essential attribute of heroes, saints, and flourishing people in all walks of life.

Historia
Now in a third edition, Robert M. Sapolsky's acclaimed and successful Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers features new chapters on how stress affects sleep and addiction, as well as new insights into anxiety and personality disorder and the impact of spirituality on managing stress. As Sapolsky explains, most of us do not lie awake at night worrying about whether we have leprosy or malaria. Instead, the diseases we fear-and the ones that plague us now-are illnesses brought on by the slow accumulation of damage, such as heart disease and cancer.

Each chapter provides a good overview of the relevant physiological systems, so you're never lost. Also, it's balanced and not over-reaching (acknowledging that not every disease is due to stress), which i appreciated. Slightly annoyed by the narration, but otherwise a very good listen.

A young, naïve but ultimately courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals—in stature if not experience. Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg—whose true name is hidden from all he and Dunk encounter. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two . . . as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits. Featuring more than 160 all-new illustrations by Gary Gianni, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a must-have collection that proves chivalry isn’t dead—yet.
