Subpar
Revisado: 07-10-23
Maybe I was too eager to read the first book I could find following the arrest of the suspect. Edwards seems predominantly focused on relating his own perspective on the case. His only credential is being a true crime podcaster. He discusses dreaming about the murderer's intentions and the "insights" gleaned.

Author defines "idk," but not "scissoring"
Revisado: 11-24-22
Unclear who the intended audience is--the author explains what "idk" means, but casually mentions scissoring without explanation. references a LOT of tweets from both the murderers and the victim--feels like cherry picking to make a hagiography for Skylar and to find additional evidence that murderers are bad people. the book ends with a chapter about how to monitor and discipline your children, lest they become murderers as well.

Historia
Since 2015, there has been a spectacular boom in a centuries-old delusion: that the earth is flat. More and more people believe that we all live on a pancake-shaped planet, capped by a solid dome and ringed by an impossible wall of ice. How? Why? In Off the Edge, journalist Kelly Weill draws a direct line from today’s conspiratorial moment, brimming not just with Flat Earthers but also anti-vaxxers and QAnon followers, back to the early days of Flat Earth theory in the 1830s.

Incisive and clear-eyed, Off the Edge tells a powerful story about belief, exploring how we arrived at this moment of polarized realities and explaining what needs to happen so that we might all return to the same spinning globe.

Historia
With makeup and an affected Elvis pout, Tucson’s Charlie Schmid was a crude parody of a bad-boy heartthrob. In 1964, he still had a hold on girls who’d follow him anywhere. He murdered three of them. It was the dawn of the free-love movement - perfect for a magnetic madman who’d also foreshadow its end a few years later in the malignant charisma of Charles Manson. The inspiration for a classic story by Joyce Carol Oates, Schmid, the most bizarre serial killer of any era, was the epitome of a narcissist flattered into believing he could get away with murder.

Historia
Forced to come to grips with his understanding of the past - and its implications for the present - Roberts deftly moves between "then" and "now," ignorance and understanding, in honest, confessional prose that places the reader front and center for a true story that, indeed, is far stranger than fiction. Obsessive in nature and elliptical in structure, Roberts' story ultimately inhabits the liminal space between truth and appearances, love and danger, the hunter and the hunted.
