Historia
The four Jacobson children were raised to respect the value of a dollar. Their mother reused tea bags and refused to pay retail; their father taught them to budget before he taught them to ride a bike. And yet, now that they’re adults, their financial lives are in disarray. The siblings reunite when their newly widowed father puts their Jersey Shore beach house on the market. Packing up childhood memories isn’t easy, especially when there’s other drama brewing.

Every family’s drama - but in a good way
Revisado: 06-22-24
Much like diets, a huge sum of money can increase or shrinks parts that you didn’t want to grow or reduce. You can’t have the good without the bad. In this book, a Jewish NJ family members who always pondered “what would I do if I had all the money in the world?” actually has a chance to act accordingly when they win the lottery. At the absence of their dominant, loving mom, they need to grow up and make decisions on family and money that they never really needed to consider; and find out that it’s financial comfort that drives them out of their comfort zone.
I found the book funny, heartwarming and interesting, and liked the fact that everyone was essentially a good - not flawless - person, trying to carve their way in the world.

Historia
Joe Coulombe founded what would become Trader Joe’s in the late 1960s and helped shape it into the beloved, quirky food chain it is today. Realizing early on that he could not compete and win by playing the same game his bigger competitors were playing, he decided to build a store for educated people of somewhat modest means. In this way, Joe laid down a blueprint for other business owners to follow to build their own unique shopping experience that customers love, and a work environment that employees love being a part of.

Better than any marketing course I’ve taken
Revisado: 03-26-24
I feel lucky to have been privy to the method behind the cult that is Trader Joe’s. The principles, the learnings, unveiling so much of the Supply Side and M&A strategy, employee management, and of course branding and marketing. I definitely recommend for anyone interested in business and strategy.

Another great King
Revisado: 09-14-23
Seems like many of the reviewers did not like the constant “political” references. However, since we all lived through these times, and as the author says next generations wouldn’t be able to grasp it - I thought it was great that King captured a moment in history so unimaginable that, as he says in his “author’s note”, he indeed never thought about this possibility when setting If It Bleeds in Dec, 2020.
I also found that the depiction of racism, homophobia, and anti-vaccination in respected elderly scholars to be a very good unmasking (ha ha) of our biases towards people.

Historia
Lauren and her family—lucky bastards—have been granted the use of a spectacular brownstone, teeming with history and dizzyingly unattractive '70s wallpaper. Adding to the home’s bohemian, grungy splendor is the bar occupying the basement, a (mostly) beloved dive called The Sweet Spot. Within days of moving in, Lauren discovers that she has already made an enemy in the neighborhood by inadvertently sparking the divorce of a couple she has never actually met.

As always, Amy Poeppel reminds us not to judge harshly and make room for people - physically with our hospitality and mentally for changing. Friendships and love win yet again over anger and revenge. Great narration, too!

I loved this book. If it wasn't for my book club I would not have picked it up, but I'm so glad it was the book of the month.
I recommended it to all my friends and will buy copies to give them.
I love Cheryl Strayed's outlook on life and her ability to literally read between the lines.

I'll tell you this - I regret reading it
Revisado: 11-30-22
You never regret a good book, do you?
You do!
This was so depressing, so manipulative that the great writing did not redeem it in any way.
I usually love Celeste Ng's books, and this came highly recommended, but it was just too terrible for me.

Fresh and Fun
Revisado: 09-08-22
Another "I wish Lily Chu was my bestie" conjuring book. The female protagonist is smart, fierce, takes no ish, and unknowingly (and uncaringly) beautiful, and I enjoyed every moment of this escapism into the world of what is probably a BTS-like universe. The "regular ol' girl smashed into celebrity" genre carries an indulgent promise that is not always delivered, but this book seals and delivers!

Historia
Like an avenging, purple-haired Jedi bringing balance to the mansplained universe, Bee Königswasser lives by a simple code: What would Marie Curie do? If NASA offered her the lead on a neuroengineering project—a literal dream come true after years scraping by on the crumbs of academia—Marie would accept without hesitation. Duh. But the mother of modern physics never had to co-lead with Levi Ward.

A laugh out loud (and yes, good-frustrating at times) fun romance for cat people and the rest of humanity. Like a good vegan muffin, it’s lots of sugar with a side of ethics and leaving you wanting more.
