Historia
On July 12th, 1776, Captain James Cook, already lionized as the greatest explorer in British history, set off on his third voyage in his ship the HMS Resolution. Two-and-a-half years later, on a beach on the island of Hawaii, Cook was killed in a conflict with native Hawaiians. How did Cook, who was unique among captains for his respect for Indigenous peoples and cultures, come to that fatal moment? Hampton Sides’ bravura account of Cook’s last journey both wrestles with Cook’s legacy and provides a thrilling narrative of the titanic efforts and continual danger that characterized exploration.

Historia
A mysterious race of North American giants. An ancient Hebrew inscription in a Cherokee burial mound. A blood oath made by blindfolded Freemasons. Are these three historical oddities the reason the CIA is trying to brainwash historian Cameron Thorne and his fiancee Amanda Spencer-Gunn? The answer lies buried in the legends of the Knights Templar, within the rituals of the secretive Freemasons and, most significantly of all, inside the bowels of the Smithsonian Institution

Usual stuff but entertaining (again)
Revisado: 10-26-23
Follows the successful pattern we know
Realistic to start, tension building in the middle, a few unlikely/unrealistic breaks and the exciting finish
BTW far better than the Maze and those painful Thirsty Thursdays

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Solid read/listen
I good mix of actual events and filler
And now I’m stuck with the lasting image of FDR coming to Churchill’s room for a meeting and seeing old Winnie in his birthday suit with a cigar & a drink, thinking nothing of it

More not always better
Revisado: 01-01-21
A very interesting story but too much detail detracted from the overall experience
I enjoyed hearing about the Fascinating series of events, the unfortunate sequence of decisions and the exciting accounts of the rescues
But the crew’s life stories and the explanations of simple terms/exchanges made this a long project
It would benefit from an abridged version
Or else, it’s just me being impatient
I do recommend this
Enjoy
