Feels like they believe we all need to think the same things (religion or morals or pride in the same thing so we can work towards something better) while constantly complaining that because society has become so unwilling to be dominated by single-minded megalomaniacs we are all doomed if we don’t follow some Stepford level sameness that such leaders promote. It never occurs to them that we all see the world differently. Somehow they think that because individuals in society can loudly complain about what makes those individuals uncomfortable, it’s like some sort of oppressive domination by fashion.

I know it’s an important piece of social engineering expression to know about, but picking random quotes from great thinkers as it does to support their blinkered perspective is at best tiresome and at worst … I won’t say.

Overall 🤨😾😡

Cialdini’s perspective is uniquely valuable. I recommend listening at 1.1x speed though. It’s a long read but its insight and thoughtful application to the real world in this modern day of information overload is valuable for every consumer.

Eye opening and a bit salty. Like the well written owner’s manual you should have been born with.

Wow. I recall reading this in the early ‘70s when 2011 was a long time to come.

Brunner got so much right, but major themes were missed. Shiggies became liberated, and now endowed with MeToo. China became the fastest growing economy for decades. Bill Gates missed the Internet, decades after Brunner. Nevertheless, the tenor of our just past world matches very well to his prognostication.

The reader does a fantastic job of bringing the book alive. It’s been very worth the long listen to experience it again.

Takes a bit to get into the deep fact-laced cadence of the storyline, but worth it to get a fullish sense of how real and serious the problem set is.

At the end of 2019, it provides a reason to renew your faith in mankind, provided it can come together for the strong net positive gains civilization brings. It’s hard to think of better reasons to become educated and work to educate others about how a society can work smartly together to overcome the likely pandemics just around the corner than are exposed in this book.

Because it’s so full of detail, I don’t think many will read it, unfortunately. But I hope that those who do will become super-spreaders of the idea that there is an urgent need to solve for the problems Ali and William expose here.

Ronan's perspective was a bit not yet seasoned to be as compelling as I hoped. Nevertheless, who else can we get these truths from today? The Trump administration fumbles merely echo the failure to "edumacate" (as Bush 2 might recognize it) the American public to its valued role in the world. That Trump is abandoning our critical capacity to solve problems for humanity diplomatically while playing this role is happening because our public cannot even see it slipping away. As Ronan pointed out, other recent Presidents fail to fully understand the value of diplomatic capacity as an alternate to hard power until it's late in their terms. I can hope that those forcibly retired diplomats spend the rest of their careers explaining to American youth the art of the possible, and argue for supporting the practical requirements to succeed at it

If you want to think deeply about it, don't miss this book. Narration is good, concepts accessible if deep. won't disappoint.

Where does Influencer rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Great set of stories about how this being an Influencer thing works. Not much more to say about it. Worth the read. Happy to have had it on audible so I can listen to it in no additional time while I walking or commuting.

Would you consider the audio edition of Crucial Conversations to be better than the print version?

Read Crucial Accountability first, probably should have reversed order, but for me it was the right way. The meat of why you need to have these conversations is in the Accountability book. This one helps one do that work. Highly recommend reading or listening to them both if you need them.

Any additional comments?

Only rated the story poorly because it's not a story, it's got a lot of little stories in it, but it's a guide book. A very good one too. (Have to put stars in this third category or the form won't take comments, so it's not a reflection on the value of the book to rate the "story" a 2).

I like listening to the works of this author and his team on the other two books, Crucial Accountability and Influencer, because they organize the works well for listening; something you don't see all the time.

Really appreciate their works.
