This is such a beautiful story. The prose is lyrical and real and raw. The story is both relatable and fantasy like. The realness comes from the uncertainty in life. Nothing is perfectly wrapped up. Emotion, hurt, lust- all real all present and unpredictable. Terrific story telling and the narration is some of the best ever! I fell in love with this book and I listen to it over and over and read it too! It’s a gem.

I started the story with a hardcover copy abs then switched to audible so I could listen during my commute to work. What a treat that was! Robin Miles brought N.K. Jemisin’s genius to life. The City We became is not only a magical fantastical journey that’s out of this and part of this world but it also serves as a mirror gazed upon human fragility, strength and plain stupidity. The 5 New York City boroughs represent the diversity that brings flavor into any city, literally or figuratively. There are elements of post colonial symbolism here, especially in the depiction of Staten Island and the overall takeover prevalent in the story. Jemisin does a wonderful job of making it plain and subtle at the same time. All the while ... wanting more! You did that sis.

Mr. Coates has a gift. His expert story-telling is energetic. He takes his time with character development and every last utterance counts. Every sentence has meaning. Every paragraph can stand alone and become a lyrical poem with several meanings. All of which sing the woes detailed in any slave narrative: separation of families; Christian hypocrisy; misogyny; White supremacy; infantilism of Black men and women; and the Black community.

The stories hug you, uplift you, make you hum and sing. Inspire gratitude for the ancestors. Bring clarity to our role here and now as a people for love and community. Calls to urgency too hold the Black family close and protect our survival forever.

Joe Morton— What a gifted man. Through his crafted voice you felt every word, every pang, every song as if you were there. The characters came alive and were distinguishable through the sound of their voices. When he embodied a character he became possessed by the memory of them in the same way Hiram had. I don’t know who else could have done a better job. This is a masterpiece. I must say the experience has left me as it did Hiram forever changed.
