Historia
Early morning, August 1975: a camp counselor discovers an empty bunk. Its occupant, Barbara Van Laar, has gone missing. Barbara isn’t just any thirteen-year-old: she’s the daughter of the family that owns the summer camp and employs most of the region’s residents. And this isn’t the first time a Van Laar child has disappeared. Barbara’s older brother similarly vanished fourteen years ago, never to be found.

Okay mystery
Revisado: 07-19-24
Excellent reader, but I found it to be a bit scattered in terms of development of the characters. Some of the plot-lines seemed hackneyed to me.

A flawed masterpiece
Revisado: 03-18-24
While the writing is spectacularly good, many of the ideas Mitchell expresses are deeply repugnant. The novel is much more racist than the film, and I found many of the views to be truly disgusting; in particular, the whitewashing of slavery. She made it sound mostly benevolent. The KKK is portrayed as a heroic organization. I just can’t get past these things. As a historical document of racist ideas I suppose it is important, but I worry that this novel can still successfully sell those ideas. Sad.

Meh
Revisado: 03-02-24
Predictable and mediocre. I found the reader annoying as well. I wouldn’t spend my money on it.

Eeeesh!
Revisado: 07-06-23
Ridiculous plot. It is like one of those teen slasher movies where the kids always make the illogical move and then get picked off by the killer. One of the worst books I have listened to in quite some time.

Great listen
Revisado: 01-30-23
Great listen. Anderson saves his personal perspectives for late in the book. Would have liked more information about source material.
