Historia
1946: World War II has ended and all over the world, young women are beginning to fulfill the promises made to the men they wed in wartime. In Sydney, Australia, four women join 650 other war brides on an extraordinary voyage to England—aboard HMS Victoria, which still carries not just arms and aircraft but a thousand naval officers. Rules are strictly enforced, from the aircraft carrier’s captain down to the lowliest young deckhand. But the men and the brides will find their lives intertwined despite the Navy’s ironclad sanctions.

Educational yet compelling
Revisado: 01-03-21
McKenzie's performance is stunning, going between an Australian accent and her own British voice, character voices, and emotional renderings. The story itself is interesting history mixed with the personalization of vastly different women being confined together on the voyage. This will be a book I listen to quite a lot.

It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the 10th annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to out charm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute. The odds are against him. He’s been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low.

Interesting
Revisado: 12-31-20
A lot of criticism has been directed towards Santino Fontana in his job of narration, but unless you're looking for a play actor he does an absolutely fine job of narrating this. He is no Jim Dale, but that type of narration would be unfitting for this kind of story. The book is interesting. it is a look into the life of Coriolanus Snow, the development of such a sadistic and uncaring person. a sociopath, by all means. It is interesting to see, even though it is a brief look, only encompassing less than a year of his life, into how he started on his path of corruption, abuse, and evil. I enjoyed the read. I enjoy background information. I enjoyed this book and Mr Fontana very much.

Was Hoping for Better
Revisado: 12-28-20
The narrator tells the story like he's talking to very young children. The fact that this is a children's story does not mean you are telling a story to 2 year-olds. However, I forgot how long each story was, having read them all as a young teen. I was also a new reader to chapter books at that time. As an adult, I think the stories I could get through are really quite boring. My children will not be interested in these tales I think. I know these are richly cultured stories from the beginning of the 20th century, but they are really hard to get into today with this particular narrator.

Historia
When Edward Cullen and Bella Swan met in Twilight, an iconic love story was born. But until now, fans have heard only Bella's side of the story. At last, listeners can experience Edward's version in the long-awaited companion novel, Midnight Sun. This unforgettable tale as told through Edward's eyes takes on a new and decidedly dark twist. Meeting Bella is both the most unnerving and intriguing event he has experienced in all his years as a vampire.

Wonderfully Satisfying
Revisado: 09-09-20
I am very glad that Stephanie Meyer finally published this book. I avoided all other twilight replicas from Edwards perspective knowing that they were not written by her. it was very insightful to be inside his mind and understand why he was so attracted to Bella. I will be listening to this over and over again in the future. here's to hoping she might do the same thing for each of the other three books in this series.

Historia
On The Power of Vulnerability, Dr. Brown offers an invitation and a promise - that when we dare to drop the armor that protects us from feeling vulnerable, we open ourselves to the experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives. Here she dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and reveals that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage.

Great Discussion
Revisado: 07-13-20
This is Brené Brown leading a workshop of sorts, somewhere. It takes place over a couple of days, and was broken up into several sessions so the audience/participants could digest little bits at a time. I loved it. I love workshops. I participated by myself to all the parts, raising my hand when questioned, adding my voice to statements that resonated, and nodding or shaking my head. It's the next best thing to being there in person.

Historia
When Hisham Matar was a 19-year-old university student in England, his father was kidnapped. One of the Qaddafi regime's most prominent opponents in exile, he was held in a secret prison in Libya. Hisham would never see him again. But he never gave up hope that his father might still be alive. "Hope," as he writes, "is cunning and persistent." Twenty-two years later, after the fall of Qaddafi, the prison cells were empty, and there was no sign of Jaballa Matar. Hisham returned with his mother and wife to the homeland he never thought he'd go back to again.

interesting and Purposefully Unsatisfying
Revisado: 06-10-20
When I began this book I had no background to start it; this was a book club choice. I am a 47 year old American woman, who has never trusted the media to tell the whole story of anything and didn't pay attention to Lybia, ever. From the get go, I realized the author was either pretentious or vastly smarter and more well read than myself. I discovered, it is the latter, but that Matar is extremely well read. There is no real political agenda except when trying to explain the disappearance of his father. It is a perspective of the author and his family who are immensely affected by the dictatorship of the country. At the end, the story just stops. There is no conclusion, but this is the author's experience. In leaving no real end, you are forced to experience a finite fraction of his own dissatisfaction. A good read, an uncomfortable read, a saddened story.
Matar reads his own story, and has no real emotion in his voice. It is rather bland feeling for such an emotional book. However, I would guess that pronunciation of the Lybian names, french locations, Italian phrases, and the Lybian language which are frequent occurrences in this book, are made beautiful by having Matar read this book. I mean, how many voice over readers can there be that speak such a range of languages well enough to not detract from the story. Matar's own English accent sounds a bit Irish to me, and is more British in his pronouncement which is very pleasant to the ear.
