Commissar Ciaphas Cain and the Valhallan 597th are in the thick of it again, putting down an uprising of Chaos cultists on an Imperial mining world. 4 hour novella overstretched to full length
Revisado: 07-01-24
I don’t know what happened. Was this written by somebody else? The story had its good moments, but I had to keep rewinding because my mind would wander. Seems like it had one plot repeated twice. The fight scenes are excellent, but the plot itself is the one dud in the otherwise outstanding series.

Historia
Now that news of Horus' treachery is in the open, a time of testing has come. Some Legions have already declared their allegiance to the Warmaster while the loyalty of others lies firmly with the Emperor. As Horus deploys his forces, loyalist Astartes learn that a massive Wordbearers fleet is heading to Ultramar, home of the Ultramarines. Unless they can intercept the fleet, and destroy the mighty battleship that has been sent to reinforce it, the Ultramarines may suffer a blow from which they will never recover.

Worst book of the series: Space Naval Finding Nemo
Revisado: 05-22-24
Just not a fun listen unfortunately. There were some good parts but at the end I had to force myself to keep listening because I wanted to know the lore. Trying to keep up with all the ships and their crew made it hard to follow. A lot of times there is no pause between events on one ship and then on another, so a minute can go by without you realizing the action has moved. I had to rewind many times due to this to keep things straight.
The whole book is a space naval “finding nemo.” No interesting plot twists, no events on planets. just chase chase shoot run away chase some more.

Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

Not a book on human evolution
Revisado: 06-26-23
Unfortunately, this is not a book on human evolution. Chapter 1 was and I loved that, but then it turned into a philosophy exposition of mostly modern humans. Well written and interesting, but a bait and switch nonetheless.

Great stories dampened by mid-narrated dialogue
Revisado: 02-08-23
Awesome short stories; absolutely loved those.
Problem was with the woman narrator, and she narrates the bulk of the stories. My main issue is her character voices. She loses track, or didn’t pre-read or something. She often accidentally switches the voices so they belong to the wrong speaker. It makes lengthy dialogues difficult to follow.
She’s an excellent narrator, in every other respect. Sound engineering is top notch too. Just wish she didn’t mess up all that dialogue. ☹️

Not even in the same league as it’s predecessor
Revisado: 02-02-23
It’s a serviceable story I guess. Have had to rewind a bunch because my mind keeps wondering.
The previous book in this series was a masterpiece. Kept me on the edge of my seat and up well into the mornings. This one is just long winded and lacks cohesion and focus.

I never listen to dramatic renditions like this… but I somehow love it. Super fun ghost story, with great voice acting. The sound design and music never interfere, and are subtly and excellently executed. Bravo! I’m going to have to listen to them all now.

Historia
In this taut, chilling audiobook, Lester Ballard - a violent, dispossessed man falsely accused of rape - haunts the hill country of East Tennessee when he is released from jail. While telling his story, Cormac McCarthy depicts the most sordid aspects of life with dignity, humor, and characteristic lyrical brilliance.

Cormac McCarthy does King of the Hill
Revisado: 12-01-20
Awesome book, very much what you’d expect. However the way the narrator does some of the voices reminded me strongly of the King of the Hill voices. The main character is basically Bill. Somehow the hillbilly voices just seem a bit too over the top, but in a way, it goes with the story. Really gives it a far out wackiness that jars awesomely alongside the menacing storyline.
Reminded me more of Suttree than Blood Meridian. Probably won’t read again and again like Blood Meridian, but it’s worth the one time listen for sure.
Richard Poe would’ve been a better narrator but Tom S. does it justice.

Historia
"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.

Hands down the best performance of Moby Dick you will ever hear. I have listened to this book about 20 times, and I seriously never get tired of it. It’s my goto book for long plane rides or lazy summer afternoons. This stuff is not easy to read out loud, and William Hootkins just does a fantastic and world class job. Bravo sir!

Fantastic book!
Revisado: 11-15-19
Loved the book! The narration was excellent as well. Very thorough accounting of the various theories and actions that have taken place on oak island. Also explains some of the details I missed when watching the show. I appreciated the fairness of the rhetoric, and also liked how the author let his own opinions come through. Felt like I was right there with him, as he researched and took his notes. Really well done!
