bring back the good narrator

These are some of the best fantasy novels ever written. Works which stand apart from so many others.
A fact which makes it tolerable to listen to this man narrate these stories. He is a good narrator in his own right, but it's almost unbearable trying to listen to parts of the story featuring characters like Kruppe and Icarium.
It's almost painful. So many of these characters were brought to life in such exquisite detail. Each one made wholly unique, memorable, unforgettable even. Icariun sounds like a whiny nasal emo clown. Kruppe just sounds like the majority of other male characters....
I would pay 3× the price for each of these books to have the original narrator back.

Words of praise would struggle to do this book justice.
I suggest you listen to it and decide for yourself.

Not a tale for the impatient or the inattentive. Half hearted listeners will lose the plot and never find it again.
This is the rarest kind of writing , world building and story crafting. It is rich and deep. A real masterwork.

At its core, the story and performance are great, as are all of Rowe's other books in this universe.

That said, the story spends an infuriating amount of time doing things other than progressing. Round and round and round with details, doubts, moralizing, rationalizing, agonizing...

Don't incapacitate that person, we need to ask them questions... You can do that after you capture them, even if they lose consciousness. They're not dead. But nooo, let's give opportunity after opportunity for the opponents to turn the tables..... again.

Don't bring a permanent end to someone who is repeatedly ordering you to be killed yourself. Can't do that. Wouldn't want to actually hurt the person that literally just ordered you killed... repeatedly...

Far more woke, emotional and angsty than any of the other books or story lines. Almost like an Aesop's LGBT fable manifesto.

the story is definitely heating up.

surprisingly close to the direction I thought this series was going to go. I was picturing something along the lines of Ender's Game meets Ready Player One.

the thing that's got me disappointed is the narrator didn't reproduce the characters from the first book. all the fantastic, distinct characters he created turned into generic junk. tough buff marine Moose turning into a vapid California valley boy pothead hippy is the worst of the bunch, but every single voice profile took a nose dive into the dirt. damn shame.

damn shame when the choice is made to change narrators in the middle of a series. this guy can't hold a candle to Matthew Lloyd Davies. no comparison. the story continues to be enjoyable.

I really wish whoever is in charge, be it the author or his business associates, would stop changing narrators.
This guy sucks. I'm at the very beginning and I can't differentiate between 2 of the longest running characters in the series because they sound like the same exact person. Every time the narrator switches from one to the other, I'm just lost. Even the guy from the 5th book, the Maykul Maykul Maykul guy did a better job distinguishing characters.

I've listened to worse narrators.
The story remains consistently enjoyable.
All you can do is laugh and cringe and laugh some more when this chucklehead of a narrator butchers another word... or the same word for the hundredth time. He's not a bad narrator. He just didn't bother making his performance consistent with the previous ones.

I will start by mirroring the sentiments of others; Joe Hempel did an outstanding job narrating Finder, the first book in The Finder Chronicles. The quality of his performance is sadly not replicated by Paul Woodson.
I do not envy anyone the task of following in the footsteps of someone who performs any job so well. It sets the bar of expectations very high.
Mr. Woodson's performance is by no means bad. He just doesn't rise to the same level of performance as some narrators who can and do perform in different vocal tones to differentiate and accentuate different characters .
Once I got past my disappointment in the change of narrators, I enjoyed Mr Woodson's performance well enough
His voice is pleasant enough to listen to and he speaks quite well.
With that out of the way, on to the book itself.
Driving the Deep is a fantastic addition to this series.
Though I could say much more than that, I won't.
If you enjoyed the first book, you will also enjoy this one.
I would think that if you found the first book entertaining and enjoyable, continuing the series is simply a given. How could you not?
I am looking forward to further adventures with Fergus Ferguson.
