Tolstoy search for the meaning of life is a search for moral perfection and acting for the betterment of others. He focuses on universal principles like love thy neighbour and the Golden Rule and the unity of life. The idea of the Kingdom of God is within you is to create a paradise on Earth through nonviolence, turning the other cheek, kindness/, and sisterly and brotherly love. The first will I ever read from Leo Tolstoy was What is art? My favouring passage is:
"Art can …evoke reverence for the dignity of every [person] and for the life of every animal, can make [people] ashamed of luxury, of violence, of revenge, or of using for their pleasure that of which others are in need; can compel people freely, gladly, and without even noticing it, to sacrifice themselves in the service of [others]. The task of art … is to make that feeling of…love of one's neighbour … the customary feeling and the instinct of all [people]." It encapsulates his fiction and nonfiction especially his later work in the last three decades of his life.

I will read and reread his work many times. It’s guided me in Animal Save Movement where we bear witness to the truth of our fellow creatures and Plant Based Treaty where the idea is to promote the worldview that all life is one and “when we try to harm others we really do evil to ourselves.” (Tolstoy, Esarhaddon, King of Assyria)

I didn’t know how close we are to a catastrophic sea level rise and how much rides on us take climate action now. Jeff Goodell’s remarkable storytelling and appreciation of nature, of seals and seabirds, and of scientists makes it a book you don’t want to put down. I’ve ordered the rest of Jeff’s books. One suggestion: he mentions the menu a few times: bacon here and ribs there. Leo Tolstoy said you either get it or you don’t wet animals. I don’t think Jeff gets it yet on food emissions and how pigs should be honoured as much as your dog or the intelligent seals he has the privilege to meet. I hope Jeff’s next book is on the need to transition to a plant based food system. A third of the ghg emissions come from food and animal farming is a leading cause of the transgression of all nine planetary boundaries. We need a plant based treaty.

This book needs to be read by everyone to save a planet in peril.

1. We need to organize reading circles and do a major social media ad campaign to educate everyone on the existential threat from climate collapse outlined by James Hansen in his book Storms of My Grandchildren. Dr. Hansen is in his 80s now. He finished this book in 2009. He is predicting major sea level rise and more severe storms in the current generation of children’s lifetimes—so within the next few decades—expecting massive climate calamities and within thennirreversible changes in the next centuries to what could lead to such high temperatures that the water from the oceans evaporated and the contents become dry deserts with sand storms changing the blue planet with 10 million species to a hazy brown lifeless planet.

2. James Hansen sees the light in solutions like an steadily increasing carbon tax at the source with no exceptions and a ban on coal. He calls for energy efficiency, soft energy like wind, solar and hydro and next generation nuclear power to avoid the carbon bomb that guarantees a runaway climate effect if we continue to use every drop of oil. Tar sands are even worse than oil and their continued development guarantee the end of the planet.

3. We need a global bookshelf with these books to start transitioning the world away from fossil fuels and animal farming:

- James Hansen, Storms of our Grandchildren
- Greta Thunberg and her family’s, Our House is on Fire
- George Monbiot, Regenesis

Greta Thunberg inspires a young generation to fight climate change with school strikes and global days of action.

Monbiot sees agricultural sprawl caused by animal farming as the biggest environmental issue since land is deforested for grazing and to produce animal feed and destroying essential carbon sinks.

4. We need a Fossil Fuel Non Proliferation Treaty and a Plant Based Treaty

I’m going to work on this for the rest of my life. Join me. We can do it!

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to The Christian Bubble. It reminded me of how grateful I am to be alive and to have the life that I have, and to not take for granted my place of privilege.

It helped raise awareness to the fact of how humans can control populations through fear and religion. We must not forget there are trillions of other life forms on this planet that deserve the quality, justice, and the right to their bodies and their life.

Exploiting and killing humans and animals is violent and unjust no matter how it is done. Please do not support the commodification of the vulnerable, live vegan 💗
