Historia
In this classic work of economic history and social theory, Karl Polanyi analyzes the economic and social changes brought about by the great transformation of the Industrial Revolution. His analysis explains not only the deficiencies of the self-regulating market, but the potentially dire social consequences of untempered market capitalism. New introductory material reveals the renewed importance of Polanyi's seminal analysis in an era of globalization and free trade.

Self regulating markets eventually fail
Revisado: 02-15-25
Polonyi’s prose is ostentatious and difficult to follow, but if one can get through it, one will see how important this book is. He explains how the classical “liberal” economic and political system failed in the late 19th and early 20th century. He describes how an attempt at creating a self regulating market may only be done by making society subservient to the market system. The political economies based on self interest lead to fascism or socialism, as society tries to rescue itself from the ravages of the market. As the neoliberal order of our current time collapses, the ideas in this book might be worth a look.

Brilliant and engagingly written, Why Nations Fail answers the question that has stumped the experts for centuries: Why are some nations rich and others poor, divided by wealth and poverty, health and sickness, food and famine?

A more general theory on wealth and poverty
Revisado: 11-10-24
I really enjoyed hearing a new and much more universal theory on why some countries are poor and some are rich

Historia
Before 1870, humanity lived in dire poverty, with a slow crawl of invention offset by a growing population. Then came a great shift: invention sprinted forward, doubling our technological capabilities each generation and utterly transforming the economy again and again. Our ancestors would have presumed we would have used such powers to build utopia. But it was not so. When 1870-2010 ended, the world instead saw global warming; economic depression, uncertainty, and inequality; and broad rejection of the status quo.

Excellent
Revisado: 04-09-23
This is the best book about the 20th century political economy I have ever read, or listened to. It is complete, insightful, and ties things together in a way I had not considered before.

Historia
For generations, everything has been getting faster, better, and cheaper. Finally, we reached the point that almost anything you could ever want could be sent to your home within days - even hours - of when you decided you wanted it. America made that happen, but now America has lost interest in keeping it going.

Excellent Book
Revisado: 08-01-22
Peter Zeihan has created an incredible explanation of what is happening in the world, and more importantly, what will happen. He uses the intersection of geography, and demographics to describe how the previous world order was set up, and why. He then goes on to explain how it is decaying, and what the results will be. This is one of the most useful books I have listened to in the last several years. The book is read by the author, and I quite enjoyed listening. In fact I found it difficult to stop.
