Intriguing story
Revisado: 01-24-25
This mystery/thriller had me on the edge of my seat for most of the book. Trisha, a character I known from the first two books in this series, does not always make the wisest choices- about men or her safety, but I still really like her and was rooting for her the whole time.
This is the first time I've listened to a book by this author and I was delightfully surprised at how well the narrator's concept of the characters fit with mine.
Also really love all the San Francisco elements and that the protagonist works at the Giant's stadium.

Historia
British writer Butler has crafted a grim tale that unsuccessfully blends murder with social commentary. In 1946, newly promoted detective-constable John Coffin arrives in Greenwich to take up his post. Soon after, the body of a young woman floats down the Thames to South London. It quickly becomes clear that this is no ordinary murder: the victim has been strangled, stabbed and mutilated.

Historia
Whether she’s playing an “age-defying” book editor on television or dazzling audiences on the Broadway stage, Sutton Foster manages to make it all look easy. How? Crafting. From the moment she picked up a cross stitch needle to escape the bullying chorus girls in her early performing days, she was hooked. Cross stitching led to crocheting, crocheting led to collages, which led to drawing, and so much more. Channeling her emotions into her creations centered Sutton as she navigated the significant moments in her life and gave her tangible reminders of her experiences.

Well-written and fast-paced Thriller
Revisado: 01-24-21
I really enjoyed this book. The story is set in Mexico in the mid-2000's when politics and narcotics are creating danger and confusion in Zihuatenejo. Jade-Anne Stone is a private investigator who spends most of her time in the Sausalito office while her boyfriend gets all the exciting assignments. Until she decides to take on a job to find the missing wife of a bank executive. The quest takes her to Mexico where she quickly gets caught up in the above mentioned politics and narcotics.
I love the characters, who are definitely more fully drawn than you get in most thrillers. It's not just about the plot, but the relationships and who's scheming who. Jade-Anne is a kick ass detective whose mouth often gets her in over her head, but you have to love her spunk, her brains, and her vulnerability.
The performance by Jan M. Flynn is perfect for the pace of the book and the nuance of the characters. I hope she is chosen to read the next book in the series.

Haven't listened to a book this good in a long time. Just a great story, and narrator, who totally brings the story to life. This is a gritty tale of life on the wrong side of the tracks in LA.

Historia
Claire Marshall's world crumbled when her husband died in a fire. Emotionally fragile but determined to move forward, she buys into a small company that restores historic houses in New Orleans. Then, one of her clients is found dead in a burned building. The police suspect her of arson or murder, maybe both. No one believes that her relationship with the late Frank Palmer was strictly business.

Really gripping story
Revisado: 05-15-17
I enjoyed this book for a variety of reasons. Most importantly there were lots of great characters. The author managed to make them pleasantly quirky, where it's always possible to create annoyingly quirky characters. The protagonist, Claire Marshall, is likable despite her flaws and I enjoyed spending time with her as she tried to work out just what the heck was going on.
I loved the New Orleans and Bayou settings; there were lots of great and seemingly authentic details that added to the plot.
The story grabbed me from the start and kept my attention through many points of view and plot twists. There was plenty of humor along the way, as well.
The narrator did a good job of distinguishing the characters and had fun with the various Louisiana accents.
I would definitely read/listen to another book by this author.

You won't remember Mr. Heming. He was the estate agent who showed you around your comfortable home, suggested a financial package, negotiated a price with the owner, and called you with the good news. The less good news is that, all these years later, he still has the key. That's absurd, you laugh. Of all the many hundreds of houses he has sold, why would he still have the key to mine? The answer is; he has the keys to them all. William Heming's most at home in a stranger's private things.

Fun and creepy!
Revisado: 05-14-15
Loved this book. These "unreliable narrator" books are popular right now, for a reason. It's not so much that Mr. Heming isn't truthful, he just forgets to add some important details when relating the story.
Lots of fun twists.
This reader gave Heming the right attitude and style.
I'm looking forward to Phil Hogan's next book.

Historia
The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

Can't wait to read another one by this author.
This audio book is just a little confusing in the beginning. There are three readers narrating three characters' points of view and they all have very distinctive voices, but it's hard to keep track of which is which. Once the story gets going, it starts to make sense.
I just couldn't put this one down after about 2 hours of listening.
The main character, Rachel isn't so much an unreliable narrator as a drunk one with major blackouts. How fun is that?
I'm sure I'm not the first one to say, if you loved Gone Girl, you'll love this one. The difference being, though Rachel is flawed and keeps screwing up, you can't help but root for her all the way through.
