Well Done Overall
Revisado: 02-08-24
I read the book a long time ago and decided to listen because I loved the series Season 1. Other than the narrator consistently mispronouncing Mjolnir as “ma-jol-neer,” he was excellent. That word made me cringe a bit the whole way through, but I forced myself to just handle it.This book is classic Halo and every bit worth a reread (re-listen).
PS: interesting fact: Nyland is the guy who gave Master Chief a real name. This book made John 117 canon.

The day Clint sees his son, Joey, off to basic training, the young man he’s devoted his life to extracts one promise from him: spend the summer doing something selfish for a change. The request seems harmless enough until Joey puts his best friend, Raven, in charge of seeing it through.

My Only One-Star Review
Revisado: 05-30-23
I truly cannot understand all the high ratings for this book. The writing is amateurish, it’s boring (even the opening sex scene had me fast-forwarding), and I completely lost interest a third of the way through. This is one of those books where you wonder how the narrators get through it without laughing. I was expecting good things and instead I DNF it.

Historia
Lawrence Browne, the Earl of Radnor, is mad. At least that's what he and most of the village believes. A brilliant scientist, he hides himself away in his family's crumbling estate, unwilling to venture into the outside world. When an annoyingly handsome man arrives at Penkellis, claiming to be Lawrence's new secretary, his carefully planned world is turned upside down.

A Good Way to Spend a Few Hours
Revisado: 05-01-23
Predictable but enjoyable story. Low angst; the two MC’s chemistry was good, but I was hoping for a little more steam. Two major scenes teased it, but were fade to black.
I listened to this primarily because of Gary Furlong’s narration and he delivered as always.

Historia
I was just a boy when the monsters rose on earth, forcing humans to flee to the coastlines and live in cramped, dirty, military-controlled cities. I enlisted as soon as I could to escape. Now, I’ve been in the military for twelve years and have the scars—and missing body parts—to prove it. As a hardened soldier who’s spent his fair share of time out in the Wastes—the dangerous place where monsters roam free—I didn’t think anything could surprise me anymore.

Maybe even better than the first book
Revisado: 04-05-23
I loved Soul Eater and really liked Edin's character in it, too. I was hoping the book about him would be as good, and it turned out to be even a bit better.
I have not read the books, but I've seen them recommended again and again. I just prefer audiobooks and decided to wait for them as soon as I heard it was happening. I was not disappointed.
Creative world-building, fantastic imagination, good writing, excellent plot lines, excellent narration, and a lot of heat. What could there possibly be not to love?

Historia
Who is trying to kill the members of an elite special ops team that worked off the radar in Iraq in the '90s? It's up to Dan Stagg to track down the survivors - the men with whom he stormed an undefended surveillance station, killing everyone inside. And now, many years later, the team is being targeted in what seems like a series of unrelated attacks. Dan teams up with his old comrade Al Benson, once a rising star of the USMC, now a respectable married civilian with a few secrets to hide.

Good barely balances out the bad
Revisado: 04-05-23
This has some strong plusses, including an entertaining plot and lots of heat. The narrator was good. Now, I love a morally flawed, grey-area character maybe even more than the next person. Unfortunately, from the very first chapter, I found Dan Stagg despicable. Not because he likes to sleep with any man who'll have him, but because of what he did in the Marines.
He says he was kicked out for sleeping with a man, but the far worse transgression was that he was an officer and he slept with enlisted men. This is an egregious abuse of power and is, with good reason, against military code in all branches of armed services. The author is either completely uninformed about the military or chose to have his character not care. Dan repeatedly mentions having slept with a lot of enlisted men throughout the book and at the end is excited about doing it again.
The power differential between a Major and a Corporal is so huge, this is considered coercion or even rape. The fact that Dan is so blase about it is ironic, because the whole plot revolves around an officer who abused his rank his entire career. If you can ignore tall that, the rest is an interesting story, I suppose.
The narrator was good. He has a deep, masculine voice that fit well, although I often had trouble distinguishing Stagg's voice from Benson's. Unfortunately for Mr. Stevens, the bar has been set so high for audiobooks that a 5-star narrator now has to be a highly-skilled voice actor, and Todd Stevens didn't quite measure up. I hope he does in the future, as I'd love to hear him as he improves to five stars.
Overall, yes, I liked the book, but I sure didn't love it. Being a good writer is knowing enough about your subject to write believably. Although Mr. Lear may know a lot about being gay, he doesn't know much about the Marines. I'd heard a lot about him being a good writer of gay fiction, but this book certainly didn't convince me.

Historia
When Judah Madden flees his tiny suffocating home town in New Zealand for the dream of international ballet stardom, he never intends coming back. Not to Painted Bay. Not to his family’s struggling mussel farm. Not to his jerk of a brother. Not with his entire life plan in shreds. And certainly not into the tempting arms of Morgan Wipene, the older ruggedly handsome fisheries officer who seems determined to screw with Judah’s intention to wallow in peace. But dreams are fickle things.

Humor, good story, and the best narration
Revisado: 02-18-23
These two MC’s are great together and both of them immensely likable. Judah’s back story is especially poignant and the author does a good job of painting a man at the pinnacle of his dancing career, brought down by something completely beyond his control.
Gary Furlong’s narration is, as always, on point. I’ll listen to damn near anything he reads.

Good characters, steamy, and excellent narration
Revisado: 02-05-23
I adore science fiction M/M romance and there’s not a ton of it around. The story was a fairly standard trope, but I really enjoyed it. There was plenty of heat. The narrator is really good. Torin’s voice was what I pictured for him and Rain’s was perfect with that soft, Southern drawl. Easy to tell the MC’s apart and that’s not always the case.

Revisado: 01-11-23
She’s rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors. Creative storytelling, wonderfully-developed characters, suspense, action, and plenty of heat.
The chemistry between these two MC’s makes the whole tale incredibly hot and the supernatural aspect to their relationship adds an unexpected twist.
The narrator is excellent. His voice is perfect for these characters and I love his accents.

Harper Fox can create and tell a story beautifully. This book is no exception, but I felt a bit left dangling at the end. It can certainly be left where it is, but so many questions linger!
