For some it’s an opportunity. For others it’s a moment to question their faith: In God, in science, in everything. Still others try to keep the world running in the face of absurdity and uncertainty. And then there are the billions looking to the sky and wondering how a thing that was always just there is now... something absolutely impossible.

Delightful distraction

Given the state of the world, who would want to read a nonsense novel about the moon turning to cheese?
Especially when said book is written by Scalzi and narrated by Wheaton.

Humble self brag
Revisado: 12-27-23
I wanted to hear another persons self story that lead to developing DID. There are so few stories or people to talk to about it.
This author just skirts the issue for hours. She is obviously a NOW boomer and shares her outdated political issues while continually avoiding anything that has to do with DID. She even avoids using the term DID and gives a long explanation that MPD was from her era so she’ll stick with it because of that. She is the epitome of boomer entertainment. She talks about traveling the planet on her father’s dime while side saying he abused her to the point of dissociating. I call bullshit on her. Entitlement and DID can not even live on the same page of a book.
95% of her book/story is about feminism and politics (which is important and cool) but has zero relevance to DID.
It feels like she is covering her DID with stories that 50 years later leave you with a nasty taste of entitlement. There are hours of her “poor me” stories as she travels the world on her dad’s dime, the same dad she throws under the bus of her abuse?
For those of us who do have DID, don’t buy this book. There’s something wrong with it that makes my Spidy Senses tingle. It’s that bad.
We listened to every minute hoping that something would ring as being valid but it never did. Not one single time.
Either they do not have DID, or do not have the foundation to speak to it, it’s not my place to say, but it’s 7 hours of our lives that we will never get back.
If you’re looking for hope and validation in your own personal story, go to Podcasts instead of audiobooks. There are 2 that hit the top 10 list and the peeps are very genuine, this author either is lying about having DID or they don’t know themselves enough to help you.
If you’re wanting the validation that we, “The DID’s” go watch “”Moon Knight.” It’s on Disney now.
Don’t waste your money. If you want to hear DID truths, watch episode 2 of the “Monster Inside” on Netflix.

Historia
A Queer History of the United States abounds with startling examples of unknown or often ignored aspects of American history - the ineffectiveness of sodomy laws in the colonies, the impact of new technologies on LGBT life in the 19th century, and how rock music and popular culture were, in large part, responsible for the devastating backlash against gay rights in the late 1970s. Bronski documents how, over centuries, various incarnations of social purity movements have consistently attempted to regulate all sexuality, including fantasies, masturbation, and queer sex.

Historia
In 1978, Harvey Milk asked Gilbert Baker to create a unifying symbol for the growing gay rights movement, and on June 25 of that year, Baker's Rainbow Flag debuted at San Francisco's Gay Liberation Day parade. Baker had no idea his creation would become an international emblem of freedom. Rainbow Warrior is Baker's passionate personal chronicle, from a repressive childhood in 1950s Kansas to a harrowing stint in the US Army, and finally his arrival in San Francisco, where he bloomed as both a visual artist and social justice activist.

Toni Danzig is a dirt bag—literally. There’s nothing she enjoys more than being out in the mountains leading adventure tours. On a well-deserved break over a long weekend, she’s DJ-ing karaoke at the Dew Drop Inn when Audrey Adams takes the stage to sing the greatest middle finger break-up song ever, dedicated to her ex-girlfriend. It’s a perfect night that culminates in a transcendental experience in bed…before Audrey rushes out the next day.

Harvey Milk - eloquent, charismatic, and a smart-aleck - was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, but he had not even served a full year in office when he was shot by a homophobic fellow supervisor. Milk's assassination at the age of 48 made him the most famous gay man in modern history; 20 years later, Time magazine included him on its list of the hundred most influential individuals of the 20th century.

Lots of great information about Harvey Milk’s life and death. Interesting bits about his childhood and family growing up. Much more nuanced than the popular Milk movie with Sean Penn.
I didn’t enjoy the narration, too tremulous and emotive.

What's your favorite Paul Verhoeven film? We knew you were going to say Showgirls–but we'll put in a word for his latest, Benedetta, with Charlotte Rampling acting up a storm and nuns diddling each other with dildos carved out of statues of the Virgin. Improbably, the film is based on a true story: and within it, and within its subject's life, there are important themes of power, gender transgression, sin, belief and deviance that are worth discussing in more detail. Today, we discuss the 16th century mystic nun, lesbian, possibly demonically possessed and possibly visionary heretic, ...

There’s power in being the king who sits upon the throne, but also power in being the throne upon who the king sits. This was true as ever in the court of Emperor Ai in Han Dynasty China in 22 BC. We’re going to be talking about someone who in 21 short years of life rose from a low class status to being one of the most powerful imperial officials in China – all by becoming the favorite of the Emperor. Their passion was so renowned it led to the creation of what remains a Chinese idiomatic expression for homosexuality. But we’ll also be talking about prevailing bisexuality in the Han ...

In 1957, Frank Kameny, a rising astronomer working for the US Military in Hawaii, received a summons to report immediately to Washington, DC. The Pentagon had reason to believe he was a homosexual, and after a series of humiliating interviews, Kameny - like gay men and women for generations - was promptly dismissed from the military. Unlike many others, though, Kameny fought back.

Fantastic history of Gay rights from the Lavender Scare through 2020.
While predominantly the history of cis white make rights and their outspoken leader Frank Kameny, the author also covers all the organizations and groups Dr. Kameny worked with.
Outspoken, proud, convinced of his own rightness, he was difficult to work with but undaunted in that work. A true hero.
