Fascinating and Frightening
Revisado: 04-26-18
It's hard to believe this isn't fiction at times. You'll get a good lesson how money, politics and power work. The reader is excellent which is very important to me as a listener. I don't give away a lot in reviews because I don't want to spoil anything. Just know it's an amazing non-fiction thriller.

Historia
In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep: They become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent; and while they sleep they go to another place.... The men of our world are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices. One woman, however, the mysterious Evie, is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease.

Will it ever end?
Revisado: 11-07-17
I had high hopes for this book, but it is completely sexist and insulting to men. It's hard to believe two men wrote it!
The story is way too long and there are too many tertiary characters. Where was the editor?.
Just when I was pretty sure how it was going to end, I hear: Part Two. Seriously?
Edit down the sexism and cut the story in half, and you've got a good book.
Voice actor did a decent job.

I'm an impatient reader. I want to be engaged before the first chapter ends. The best books keep me engaged from start to finish and this one delivers. There are some good life lessons too. Great story, great characters and Ron Perlman is a great voice actor.

Historia
Shots rang out in Savannah's grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. John Berendt's sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative flows like a thoroughly engrossing novel, and yet it is a work of nonfiction.

Southern Style
Revisado: 07-22-17
I missed this book when it was a best seller. This story epitomizes the loveliness of the Old South. It reads like a lazy southern afternoon. The story is homage to the fact that truth can be stranger than fiction. The characters are interesting and outrageous. I enjoyed every minute of it. Stick around for the author's talk at the end, it adds even more delight to the book.

Big Disappointment
Revisado: 06-27-17
Other reviewers have eloquently explained all that's wrong about this book and I agree with them.
In addition, there was no need to break this up into several books that had to be purchased. It could have easily been one book.
I know where it's going from here and don't need to read (listen) to find out.

This book provides a platform on which to remember those fearless, forgotten WW2 women, whose stories deserve to be told. A real world Katnis
Revisado: 10-09-13
This is a good survival story of a young girl as she grows into a woman under very difficult circumstances. The mistakes she makes are understandable considering her lack of adult guidance. She's what Katnis Everdeen (Hunger Games) would be in the real world. The narrator was excellent, was never apparent as I listened, as a narrator should be.

Disappointing
Revisado: 10-09-13
Would you try another book from J.R. Rain and/or Francesca Townes?
No, it's too much of a tween read for me.
What could J.R. Rain have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
The main character was too shallow and naive for her purpose. An "old soul" is wise beyond her years.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
She sounded like a valley girl telling a fairy tale. Her characterization of the police detective was laughable.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Witch and the Gentleman?
I would not have continually referred to the dead vampire boyfriend as "my boyfriend". He had a name.
Any additional comments?
Maybe reading this book instead of listening would be better, but the main character was just too naive and shallow for her role.
