In the summer of 1994, psychologist Daniel Hill buys a rustic farmhouse nestled in the rolling hills of West Virginia. Along with his wife and teenage daughter, the family uproots their lives in Ohio and moves south. They are initially seduced by the natural beauty of the country setting. Local legends about the previous owner being an exorcist come to light, but by then, all Hell has broken loose.

Not for Adults
Revisado: 02-04-23
so I can't read anymore because this hasn't been scary or suspenseful for ME at all. I guess some people might enjoy it and find it scary but the tone just makes it seem like a pre-teen horror book. Something along the lines of "Are you afraid of the dark" where its still safe to run on the disney channel or whatever.
And the characters... the mother and father interactions are too picturesque and cute to be believable as actual normal human beings. they just come off as annoying and I couldn't care what happens to them. then the daughter just feels fake and tacked on to tie into a younger audience. I just couldn't stand the story, I want scary and if I cant get that it least give me and entertaining story rooted in horror. Try Little Heaven or The Deep by Nick Cutter, those were good even if they weren't outright scary

Historia
Some say that to change the world you must first burn it down. Now that belief will be tested in the crucible of revolution: The Breakers and Burners have seized the levers of power, the smoke of riots has replaced the smog of industry, and all must submit to the wisdom of crowds. With nothing left to lose, Citizen Brock is determined to become a new hero for the new age, while Citizeness Savine must turn her talents from profit to survival before she can claw her way to redemption.

This makes me depressed

This book broke my heart
I've been a huge fan of this series all the way back to "The Blade Itself". Over the years I must have gone back and loved my way through the entire series at least a half dozen times. I happily read each book and looked forward to what I knew was coming in each one. I thought it was amazing that each book that came out never failed to miss the mark, I mean even my favorite bands dont have this great of a streak with new albums.
This book is the first in the series that I will skip and try to erase from my mind if I reread the whole thing over again. Previously I thought that "Best Served Cold" was the only book I sometimes skipped but that just because it was somewhat of a side story (it was still great though). Now this book was still written and preformed well, the story was exciting in some ways, and I was emersed in some instances but.... It felt like the characters were constantly reeling from mistakes made. Knowing what I do about this series I knew not to take things as they sound and to wait for the moment things all come together. This book was written in a way to dash all those last min hopes. So it was just me watching how much time was left and wondering how things might come together to wrap up in an interesting way, this just didnt happen.
The books had so much potential from the ending of the previous book and then spent the whole time dashing your hopes and expectations. Even though that kinda the norm for Joe Abercrombie in this instance it happened in all the wrong ways.
I just feel like this is a stain on the perfect series

Two of the houses are habitable, while the third is slowly and mysteriously being buried beneath an enormous dune of blindingly white sand. But though long uninhabited, the third house is not empty. Sweet Sweet Perfection...
Revisado: 10-17-20
Ok maybe not perfection but I still loved it. I had been browsing horror stories when I came across this book and I was blown away, even though the tale wasnt horribly scary.
The characters were written excellently, they dont all get their own time to shine but you do learn enough about everyone to understand their personalities.
The story is well paced and doesn't feel like its lagging to much in some places or rushing in others.
And finally the narrator was just perfect for this book! I lost myself in the dialogue and never once had to try figuring out which characters were speaking.
All in all.... I thought it was a good book and I highly recommend it, even if it isnt a particularly scary horror story.

it gets there in the end..
Revisado: 10-13-20
ive always loved these books (the blade itself, before they are hanged, last argument of kings, etc) and enjoyed the follow ups or side stories. they have been a hit gripping and thrilling every single time, but that's always made me nervous when a new one comes out. I worry that things might slip and tarnish what's come before....luckily this wasnt what happened here but for awhile it was a close thing.
for a large portion of this book it was just watching people make terrible judgements and horrible plans that were just car crashes we were waiting to watch happen. this is kinda what happens in allot of the book but this time it lacked any characters to actually hope and cheer for. it had no Logan Nine-Fingers, no real cripple arch lector (not really), no first of the magi (not doing anything at least), really it just lacked someone we even wanted to cheer for. until the king and the "good" northmen of the story started doing anything it was just....sad. the tail end if the book luckily picked up and somewhat made up for most of its lackluster middle.
so its not a bad book and im still a bit interested to see how it will turn out but it still doesn't hold a candle on the first law or what came after till now. hope you get what I mean by this but maybe im completely off and people love it...who knows

WOW...not what I was expecting
Revisado: 08-31-20
I dont know that this book will be for everyone but those who can open themselves up to something new and "weird" will really enjoy it. ive read and loved many of Neil Gaiman's books and I only slightly knew about his comic book on the "Sandman" stories (I knew it was a popular thing and it existed). so I decided to give this a go....I was blown away with what I got. it reads more like a movie/TV series without the visuals (close your eyes and use that imagination and your there), the sound production might not be perfect but its not like you have some guy trying to vocalize a motorcycle crash or something so it gets a pass in my book. as for the crazy story...well ive got a super obvious theory as to what was happening there. so if you read his "Norse Mythology" book then you probably found out that he occasionally put a little of his personal touches on them. it feels like he was doing the same thing here except this time he was writing myths that didnt really exist (to my knowledge at least). it felt like he was writing about Norse mythology if Norse mythology wasnt actually a thing to begin with. i might be totally wrong with this idea since I dont know much on the subject matter but its what I thought of while listening. he blended real life with the fantastical and made it feel like the "Sandman's" tale could actually be the real mythos of the character (excluding the comic book characters of course). take my review anyway you want to, Im not a professional and I wont say I have the greatest taste in movies, TV, or books. My spelling/grammer is atrocious and I cant always write out my ideas in a way that gets my point across. Hopefully you understand my feeling on the book but your free to tell me how horribly wrong I am all you want.

It's Joe Abercrombie...What did you expect?
Revisado: 02-12-20
True there's no Logan Nine-Fingers as much as I would have loved there to be but the next generation isn't without its strengths. Sons and daughters of greats like the Dogman, King Luther, San Dan Glockta (or however you spell Old Stick's name), and even Mr. Much-Loved-By-The-Moon are all set to take their own place center stage.
I was a little worried that the story might not reach the heights of the previous works and that this story might ruin the love I had for those books but I was wrong. he's not trying to replace the characters we love, he's just continuing their story the only way possible.
take a chance with this book if you like The First Law series. it has the wonderful writing and flawless voice acting everyone loves about these books.

left wanting...
Revisado: 10-16-19
story: the author writes like someone trying desperately to appear well versed in the subject and "Professional". It just makes me think of some kid playing doctor who believes if they just throw in a few important sounding words that they really will be a doctor.
facts: a few stories of first hand accounts that are not presented with information that can make them seem believable or possible. they are "summarized" in some fake fact sheet "date: sometime in 1975, place: maybe Oregon or maybe Florida, witness: my crazy uncle who drinks allot, etc" I am not saying that any of the stories in this book are not true and I hate to bad mouth anyone...but, the stories are not discussed in much detail other then what the origional person saw and what the author thinks...slightly. I've read a few books that fall in this category and some of them have had stories that you knew were just total B.S. but they still were filled with others that dug deep into the lore and possibilities. This book just didnt do it for me and maybe it works for you but it's a big HELL NO if your looking for my recommendation

a beautiful entry but far from his best
Revisado: 07-21-19
most of Broms books seem to follow the same plot structure but that in no way means they are dull and boring. the child thief, krampus, and old gods do a great job of mixing together myths and legends into a new story while giving you points of reference. it gives you a way to get inside and fully understand the world that these myths embody. I'm not a smart man and ive got no gift for words but I'm trying....a little.
The child thief amd krampus were great books all around but old God's was by far my fav. try them out and I'm sure you will see what I was trying to vocalize.... especially about the plots

One Christmas Eve in a small hollow in Boone County, West Virginia, struggling songwriter Jesse Walker witnesses a strange spectacle: seven devilish figures chasing a man in a red suit toward a sleigh and eight reindeer. When the reindeer leap skyward, taking the sleigh, devil men, and Santa into the clouds, screams follow. Moments later, a large sack plummets back to earth, a magical sack that thrusts the down-on-his-luck singer into the clutches of the terrifying Yule Lord, Krampus.

Interesting tale of winter
Revisado: 01-24-17
I found Krampus to be a very original and eye opening experience that was a fun ride throughout. I've only recently heard about Krampus and never really read anything about the origins so I truly enjoyed myself with this one. It might have had some slow moments but what book really doesnt. There were times in the book I actually noticed myself being drawn in by the writing and lost in its rich detail. Krampus might seem like a silly children story but I can attest that its well worth the read
