Much better then expected
Revisado: 11-02-24
I read these type books because they are more fun then other more serious LiitRPG books or fantasy/adventure in general. These books with the provocative covers. Some are great and some too simple. I am hours into this series and It is very far from simple. BTW, I just fast forward through the drawn out erotic parts. So far everything is top %5 percent of reads: plot, story development, character development, etc. Narration is great. Often I have to replay, but that is because the story moves fast with lots of dense info I don't want to miss. Yes, this is a page turner. I have trouble putting it down to do work.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Not a one star, read on.
Revisado: 11-24-23
This is for folks like me who read the one star reviews. The other one star reviews for this book are written by idiots.
It is a book of humorous fiction. All of the readers that tried to take this as pure serous are whacked in the head. Of course it is not objective, factual, etc. The author does cover very serious topics, but with sarcasm, and over the top exaggeration. If you are not very smart, don't try this book. If you take yourself or life too seriously you will also be frustrated. Garmus is a brilliant writer. Yes, lots of the scenarios are not realistic. But the author is just using them to poke fun at many unfair situations affecting women, women in science, corporations, the 1950's, and many more. I am a male, widely read, PhD, professor, age 66. At first I scoffed at how unrealistic this book is, and how spot on the one star critical reviews were/are. But I Kept reading, because my wife loved the book. And I am a fan of Brie Larson. So I wanted to like the book. Eventually, I caught on to this non-stop, wry humor. Always tongue in cheek. Often poking fun at the absurdity of corporations and other institutions, and psycho male dominated, life styles. So apologies to the author for the one star.

Historia
Meet John Milton. He considers himself an artisan. A craftsman. His trade is murder. Milton is the man the government sends after you when everything else has failed. Ruthless. Brilliant. Anonymous. Lethal. You wouldn't pick him out of a crowd but you wouldn't want to be on his list. But now, after ten years, he's had enough - there's blood on his hands and he wants out. Trouble is, this job is not one you can just walk away from. He goes on the run, seeking atonement for his sins by helping the people he meets along the way.

Historia
From its terrifying opening to its final eloquent words, Dispatches makes us see, in unforgettable and unflinching detail, the chaos and fervor of the war and the surreal insanity of life in that singular combat zone. Michael Herr’s unsparing, unorthodox retellings of the day-to-day events in Vietnam take on the force of poetry, rendering clarity from one of the most incomprehensible and nightmarish events of our time.

Ray is good the book sucks
Revisado: 01-17-23
I don't know if I can finish this listen. Way too much whining, and almost no story. There is not a plot or character development. It is simple prose The book just goes on indefinitely as a thought stream. The writer mostly vomiting out his feelings. Hours of despair and meaninglessness. Ok we get it. Stream of consciousness at a typewriter, and every so often a small story from some obscure time, place, solider. The book does give an emotional sense of the war: But it is a very bad book.

Why we think it’s a great listen: A performance so poignant, we gave Bronson Pinchot (yes, Balki from Perfect Strangers) our inaugural Narrator of the Year award.... In the monsoon season of 1968-69 at a fire support base called Matterhorn, located in the remote mountains of Vietnam, a young and ambitious Marine lieutenant wants to command a company to further his civilian political ambitions. But two people stand in his way.

A real read - not just entertainment
Revisado: 01-17-23
This is a page turning story. It is a coming of age, a coming of life, set in an impossible situation. Very well read/performed. Sometimes had to endure because it seems too real. I read the negative reviews - ex soldiers complaining that officers can't be so dumb. But everyone knows that administration can be that selfish. Otherwise they don't become administrators. So, if you chose to take this adventure. Don't worry about impossible administration orders - probably not so impossible.

Entertaining, but a total farce
Revisado: 09-28-22
Extremally well read, and very entertaining. The problem is a basic reality check. The protagonist has foolish officers for antagonist, which is never the reality. Especially high ranking officers. Same for company management. Folks don't become high ranking by being this rash or stupid. Officers are very cunning. That is the rule of survival for management.
Second problem is always a picnic for the protagonist. So this story/fairy tale is good up until about 7th grade when children start to not believe in Santa and happily ever after.
Also it is an extremely feel good-chick flick. So no problem with that, but it is that. You have to like a hero chick flick to get through this. Or just hate management and like pretending that they can be overcome by a super powered newbie.

Ignore the one star ratters they are idiots
Revisado: 08-18-22
This is a great read. Very entertaining, extremely well read. Yes there is a little sex, it goes along with the vampire theme. Just fast forward. But it is a great action book, with a complex plot and serious character development. The fight scenes are fine. The MC is great. The down ratters probably quit way too soon, or are just prejudiced. I have 400 titles and have tossed out hundreds of terrible reads over the years. (bad reader, boring, not plausible, just stupid) this one passes. I plan to keep reading the series.

So, picking titles based on the number of reviews doesn't work. Extremely tedious book. Basically nothing happens. Just lots of words wrapped around a nothing thread of magic/devil.
