Volume 1 of the gripping epic masterpiece, Solzhenitsyn's chilling report of his arrest and interrogation, which exposed to the world the vast bureaucracy of secret police that haunted Soviet society. Features a new foreword by Anne Applebaum.

Terrible choice of narrator - decided to read instead
Revisado: 07-04-23
Why on earth would the choice be made to have this shattering epic read in the King’s English? A posh accent would have worked, but this brings the listener all the way into Buckingham Palace. I suspect someone hoped that a wry, intellectual voice might add a note of humor for buoyancy, but to me it sounds inappropriate, and tone normally forms in the mind of the reader.

Historia
Hidden in the vastness of the Saudi Arabian desert, a camel caravan of fugitives moves slowly toward its goal. Deep in the sand and out of sight are the men they seek, leaders of Al Qaeda, regrouping to strike again. One man in the caravan stands out for his strength and self-discipline. His identity is masked, his past blanketed from memory. His obsession is to be briefed on his next target.

The Unknown Future
Revisado: 07-24-22
Written shortly after 9/11, this book is a description of nightmarish technology, the rage behind terror, and the grotesque desert from which the three desert religions sprang. The reader wants the comfort of knowing what’s going to happen next, but that’s the whole point. The last paragraph could just as easily been the first. One of the traits that makes this author unique is that he doesn’t like people. For this reason, I would call his books literary rather than thrillers.

Historia
Gerald Seymour’s international thrillers have topped best-seller lists in England and have been made into television movies in both the UK and the United States. Like Ken Follett and John le Carré, he is a master at putting strong characters in compelling situations. When sources reveal that Iran’s top assassin has targeted Frank Perry for his next kill, the British Security Service wants Frank to move from the quiet English seacoast village where he’s been hiding for five years.

Masterful
Revisado: 06-29-22
This is the second Seymour I’ve read, and I’ve learned that everyone gets put in their place, including a reader foolish enough to think she or he knows what should happen or will happen. All joy and wisdom goes to the birds, who get all the writer’s tenderness and joy. I don’t know what makes the stories so satisfying even when the most sensitive characters get hurt. Sensitive people are always the most vulnerable, aren’t they?
