Good story
Revisado: 03-12-19
Nicely pieced together narrative, but overly traumatic for the amount of substance. The denouement was better than the start.

Historia
Historians have long told the story of America’s birth as the triumph of Jefferson’s democratic ideals over the aristocratic intentions of Hamilton. Chernow presents an entirely different man, whose legendary ambitions were motivated not merely by self-interest but by passionate patriotism and a stubborn will to build the foundations of American prosperity and power.

Amazing REAL story
Revisado: 08-15-18
The French portion is a bit slow reading, but only so because that WAS the failed French story. The Anerican success reads like an adventure story, even knowing that in the end it would be done. The canal still stands today as a monument to American imagination, creativity, determination, engineering, and leadership. Stevens, Gorgas, and Goethals are the heroes of the saga. What Colonels Goethals and Gorgas did would today be put in the hands of at least one 4-star general and a retinue of subordinate generals and colonels. The only negative in the story is the embarrassing treatment of the Panamanians by TR, Hay, others in our Government, and Bunau-Varilla which took almost 100 years to rectify. McCullough is the best historian of our age, as this book and others of his prove.

Historia
Set in Italy during World War II, this is the story of the incomparable, malingering bombardier Yossarian, a hero who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him. But his real problem is not the enemy - it is his own army, which keeps increasing the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service. Yet if Yossarian makes any attempt to excuse himself from the perilous missions he's assigned, he'll be in violation of Catch-22.

The BEST Catch
Revisado: 07-19-18
Catch it and you'll never forget it. I haven't in the 55 years since I first read it. No wonder it took Heller so long to write his 2d book. No other book could match the brilliance of this one. It's impossible to repeat a grand slam home run on the first pitch of a universe series. I wouldn't even read it although I so want to, because I'm afraid that he might be tarnished by a lesser creation. My own Catch-22.

Historia
In White Trash, Nancy Isenberg upends assumptions about America's supposedly class-free society. Poor whites were central to the rise of the Republican Party in the early 19th century, and the Civil War itself was fought over class issues nearly as much as it was fought over slavery. Reconstruction pitted poor white trash against newly freed slaves, which factored in the rise of eugenics. These poor were at the heart of New Deal reforms and LBJ's Great Society; they haunt us in reality TV shows like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Duck Dynasty.

Historia
In AD 793 Norse warriors struck the English isle of Lindisfarne and laid waste to it. Wave after wave of Norse "sea wolves" followed in search of plunder, land, or a glorious death in battle. Much of the British Isles fell before their swords, and the continental capitals of Paris and Aachen were sacked in turn. Turning east, they swept down the uncharted rivers of central Europe, captured Kiev, and clashed with mighty Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire.
