Historia
As the host of The Michael Brooks Show and cohost of the Majority Report, Brooks was a progressive fighter whose work brought people together from around the world. In this, his first book, he lets his understanding of the digital media environment direct his analysis of the "conservative rebels" who had taken YouTube by storm in 2018. Brooks provides a theoretically rigorous but accessible critique of the most prominent "renegades," including Sam Harris, Jordan Peterson, and Brett Weinstein while also examining the social, political, and media environment that such rebels thrive in.

Losing Michael Brooks was and is devastating to the Left
Revisado: 07-09-24
An absolute shame that such a brilliant and compassionate mind like his was taken too soon. His voice would be essential these days (this review being written during the 2023-2024 Israeli genocide of occupied Gaza). We all should try and be more like him. As Michael often said “Be ruthless to systems, but be kind to people.” RIP.

Historia
Justice for Some offers a new approach to understanding the Palestinian struggle for freedom, told through the power and control of international law. Focusing on key junctures—from the Balfour Declaration in 1917 to present-day wars in Gaza—Noura Erakat shows how the strategic deployment of law has shaped current conditions. Over the past century, the law has done more to advance Israel's interests than the Palestinians'. But, Erakat argues, this outcome was never inevitable.

Actual Laws and History Not Apartheid Propaganda
Revisado: 12-02-23
The detailed research in this book is impeccable. The author dispassionately evaluates the state of international law regarding historical Palestine at different points in time from the 1800s to today. Each legal snapshot is wildly different, but arranged together it is easy to see a narrative thread emerging from the sequence of events. Without judgement, the author examines the many “peace deals” that have been foisted upon Palestinians and why each was ultimately rejected in the name of justice and fairness. This book, released the year before the 2023 atrocities committed by Israel against Gaza and the West Bank, highlights exactly the circumstances that would go on to spark violence. I am humbled by this book, and I encourage everyone to be humbled by it, too.

Historia
Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

Dear goodness the music/babel interludes render this pointless
Revisado: 06-13-22
This book is ruined by the production decision to have every plot point/chapter break be punctuated by borderline racist “babel-ings” and laser sound effects. All the momentum is eaten up by these obnoxious stingers, which is a shame because the audio quality is already so poor you’d think it was recorded in the 80s on a TalkBoy tape recorder, in a closet, on the moon.

Historia
Judas Coyne is a collector of the macabre. But nothing he possesses is as unlikely or as dreadful as his latest discovery, a thing so terrible-strange, Jude can't help but reach for his wallet. For a thousand dollars, Jude will become the proud owner of a dead man's suit, said to be haunted by a restless spirit. But what UPS delivers to his door in a black heart-shaped box is no imaginary or metaphorical ghost. It's the real thing.

Book is good. Techno music is torture.
Revisado: 11-05-21
Seriously the intermittent terrible techno music is loud and obnoxious. Probably the worst choice for an audiobook I’ve ever experienced. It wasn’t even connected to the story, which is about an aging rock star…
Dark and spooky story though. Simple and effective.

Historia
Since its U.S. debut a quarter-century ago, this brilliant text has set a new standard for historical scholarship of Latin America. It is also an outstanding political economy, a social and cultural narrative of the highest quality, and perhaps the finest description of primitive capital accumulation since Marx. Rather than chronology, geography, or political successions, Eduardo Galeano has organized the various facets of Latin American history according to the patterns of five centuries of exploitation.

A MUST-read even if it’s an old edition!
Revisado: 03-08-19
So many people foolishly analyze current events in the global south (especially Venezuela) as if they happened in a vacuum. The endless extractionism and large scale genocide in Latin America has everything to do with the ongoing events there.
WARNING: this is the much older version but the book spans many hundreds of years so it’s content is equally as good, for what it covers.
By the way I bet Obama didn’t end up reading this after all.

As Ferguson, Missouri, erupted in August 2014 and media commentators across the ideological spectrum referred to the angry response of African Americans as 'Black rage', historian Carol Anderson wrote a remarkable op-ed in the Washington Post showing that this was, instead, 'white rage at work. With so much attention on the flames,' she wrote, 'everyone had ignored the kindling.'

MUST-LISTEN
Revisado: 06-08-18
This book is an essential narrative telling of the unbroken thread of intentional, overt, and systematic racism stretching throughout the entire history of this country. Far right thinking in this country evaluates everything in a vacuum. As if there hasn’t been an incessant white force subverting the life and liberty of millions human beings solely because of the color of their skin. This should be taught to middle schoolers as an antidote to the whitewashed imperialist propaganda most conservative schools provide.

Great sci-fi mired in deeply misogynistic text
Revisado: 03-02-18
The Foundation Series is one of my favorite sci-fi properties and I enjoyed the first two books immensely; though the increasingly sexist tone of the second book foreshadowed this third book. Women are less than an afterthought in Asimov’s mind. Female characters lack even the most basic of human feelings and motivations, and they all are “exhausted by explanations” or not interested it ‘stupid scholarly pursuits’ as it were. Where Asimov thinks he is being feminist by featuring a ‘strong’ woman, he instead is patronizing with unparalleled condescension. Apparently Asimov’s future of humanity is one where women’s participation in society barely improves beyond suffrage for eons. This series could really use a gender progressive reboot as a show or movie. Don’t @ me bro

Historia
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.
