Historia
The term "sleeping dictionary" was coined for young Indian women who slept with British men and educated them in the ways of India. Set between 1925 and the end of World War II, The Sleeping Dictionary is the story of Kamala, born to a peasant family in West Bengal, who makes her way to Calcutta of the 1930s. Haunted by a forbidden love, she is caught between the raging independence movement and the British colonial society she finds herself inhabiting.

Story kept my interest. Excellent narration.
Revisado: 04-24-15
Set in Bengal the years before and up to Indian Independence (Pom, Sarah, Pamela, Camilla,) this is a tale about Kamala's search for safe haven. The characters, while not as rich or well developed, were interesting enough to keep me listening to the book. The story is about Kamala, so perhaps the other characters did not need to be as well developed.
Liked it well enough to look up other books by Sujata Massey.
The narration by Sneha Mathan was fabulous. Will need to look for books that she has narrated.

Horrible narration, can't finish.
Revisado: 04-17-15
Couldn't care about any of the characters except perhaps the cat and the kid. Narration was 'jarring' as put by another reviewer. Why do the characters who are supposedly speaking in French have a French accent? That was just as annoying as the Irish accent that is supposedly Scottish.
The narrators overacting ruined it.

Only just discovered the author and after reading 3 other books by her I think this is one of the best. Narration was good too. Eugenics, gender equality, class prejudice, racial discrimination and love. What's there not to love about this book? Buy it.

Great story, disliked the narration
Revisado: 09-30-14
A lot of people seemed to like Sissy Spacek's narration, perhaps I am spoiled by all the better narrators I've encountered but I disliked the narration.
I've read the book so many times over the years and was excited to get the audio. Sigh. Personally I thought the Southern accent was almost non-existent which is a real shame.
Excellent story but I'll read the book instead of listening to this audio again.

Historia
Set in Memphis, Tennessee, and northern Mississippi, The Rabbit Factory presents a wildly diverse cast of characters who are looking for love, but not necessarily in all the right places. Helen is a sex-starved alcoholic who combs the local bars looking for the one thing her sugar daddy can't give her. Arthur, Helen's aging sugar daddy, is very wealthy, but suffers from severe self-confidence issues. Believing himself unloved, Eric is a runaway who oddly becomes Arthur's adopted son.

Gritty tale and excellent writing
Revisado: 07-18-14
I, personally, liked the narration but a southern accent has never bothered me. The story IS about the regular people, the ordinary people, mostly uneducated, mostly poor--those people whom we could be except perhaps for an accident of birth.
You don't see many--any?--acts of extraordinary valor or integrity here, just the dark side mostly. This is not a book about heroes, it's a book about real life where there are very few heroes. I **love** the writing, that's why I reread it every few years. One would have to appreciate fine writing to enjoy this book. (Don't read it if you are depressed!)

Historia
Soon to be a major motion picture directed by Tommy Lee Jones, The Homesman is a devastating story of early pioneers in 1850s American West. It celebrates the ones we hear nothing of: the brave women whose hearts and minds were broken by a life of bitter hardship. A "homesman" must be found to escort a handful of them back East to a sanitarium. When none of the county’s men steps up, the job falls to Mary Bee Cuddy - ex-teacher, spinster, indomitable and resourceful.

Loved the story, disliked the narration
Revisado: 03-28-14
The story was great. Loved it. The narration though left much to be desired and detracted from my enjoyment. The narrator did a good job with the voices but I think the editor must have botched the job. I could hear papers rustling in the background, every now and then the narrator would suck his teeth or completely mispronounce a word. Not his fault, he is human. Do they not edit these things? Appalling treatment of a good book.

Historia
In 1990, a young woman was strangled on a jogging path near the home of Pat Brown and her family. Brown suspected the young man who was renting a room in her house, and quickly uncovered strong evidence that pointed to him - but the police dismissed her as merely a housewife with an overactive imagination. It would be six years before her former boarder would be brought in for questioning, but the night Brown took action to solve the murder was the beginning of her life's work.

Pat Brown, Please hire a professional to Narrate.
Revisado: 12-05-13
It is an interesting read, but maybe the book version would be better because Pat Brown does a bad job of narrating it. When I first heard it I thought, "This cannot be a professional narrator, it's probably the author. WHY? Why do you guys do this?"
Long pauses and the same voice for each character make it a rather tedious listen.
SPOILER ALERT START
I have to ask, were there ANY cases where they prosecuted the killer. Understandably this is about profiling and not prosecution but with all the conjecture and theories you get... nothing. Just one case, one. One. One would have been ok, but I would probably then complain 'Only one?'
Besides, this doesn't tell us what makes the serial killers tick. For me it wasn't just prurient interest as in the What they did, but more about the Why. Along those lines I hope Audible will have the books by Dr. Dorothy Otnow Lewis and Dr. Jonathan Pincus some day.
SPOILER ALERT END
It's unfortunate that this book in the end appears to be a memoir of the author--"My Life Hunting Serial Killers and Psychopaths and That's All". If you want to know the WHY as opposed to just the What, then this is not the book for you.
I would give one star but it does have interesting tales and information so it gets two stars.

Self-Congratulatory All the Way
Revisado: 11-20-13
This book should have been called The Great Roger Depue. I was looking forward to case history, psychological methods and actual reasoning but the book glosses over the cases and points instead to how great a man Mr. Roger Depue must be. I am sure he is great at what he does--after all he did 'profile' the bad guys pretty well--but dear gods, I wondered if he sprained his arm patting himself on the back quite so much.
The narrator did a good job so he gets a 5 but the story itself isn't about a hunt for violent predators so it gets a 1.
