Historia
Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

Wow. Just wow.
Revisado: 03-17-24
What an amazing story and performance. I was 10 years old in 1968, so I never went to Vietnam but, I recall the era. The author captured the confusion, the anger, some of its magic with its music and clothes. I felt as if I stepped back into a time capsule - particularly grasping how women- especially for those who did not embark on the path of marriage and motherhood were often ignored and belittled. How frequently male doctors patronized women’s health and how help was just not available. We’ve come a long way baby. I appreciate how recovery played a role in this novel as well as highlighting and acknowledging the women who were unsung hero’s.

Helpful and Practical
Revisado: 12-17-23
I think if people are struggling with basic tasks then this book is a keeper. Although I found many of her suggestions helpful, some were too basic and elementary for my needs. Some items she admitted that she hadn’t figured out like cleaning the car. How about everytime you fill up the gas tank, you throw away some garbage? Not perfect but, improved. I did like how she focused on being kind to one self. As one who had been shamed by my family, this was life changing. I had been hoping for more organizational and cleaning tips which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.

Historia
In her memoir You Could Make This Place Beautiful, poet Maggie Smith explores the disintegration of her marriage and her renewed commitment to herself in lyrical vignettes that shine, hard and clear as jewels. The book begins with one woman’s personal, particular heartbreak, but its circles widen into a reckoning with contemporary womanhood, traditional gender roles, and the power dynamics that persist even in many progressive homes.

Anyone who has loved and lost and managed to live through it, recognizing the power they received on the other side, will be able to relate and, I assume, enjoy it as I did.
I was disappointed by the audio production; long pauses with some distortion made me reach to my phone, thinking something had gone wrong with my device. No. Just post-production editing. All in all, it is an enjoyable listen, and I recommend it

Fresh out of college and hungry to experience the world―and maybe, one day, write about it―Ann Hood joined their ranks. After a grueling job search, Hood survived TWA’s rigorous Breech Training Academy and learned to evacuate seven kinds of aircraft, deliver a baby, mix proper cocktails, administer oxygen, and stay calm no matter what the situation.

Simply Wonderful
Revisado: 09-10-23
I haven’t watched the series but, as the first book (Outlander) was free for me, I listened to it. And then could understand folk’s obsession. The second book is as compelling and addictive as the first. So, onward to the next in series.
My only gripe is on how the narrator portrays an American accent. While all the others are spot on, including the masculine Jamie, the American daughter Brianne’s is a bit like fingernails on chalkboard. All in all, a minor complaint.

Just Glorious!!
Revisado: 04-09-23
I loved the Annie books when I was young, but this one was unfamiliar. So, it was a pleasant surprise to discover it. It starts slow, and the narrator seems more like an amateur, but well worth getting through the first hour or so because the tale expands with delight. If you are needing a pick-me-up then pick this one.

A frank, smart, and captivating memoir by the daughter of Apple founder Steve Jobs. Small Fry is Lisa Brennan-Jobs' poignant story of a childhood spent between two imperfect but extraordinary homes. Scrappy, wise, and funny, young Lisa is an unforgettable guide through her parents' fascinating and disparate worlds. Part portrait of a complex family, part love letter to California in the '70s and '80s, Small Fry is an enthralling audiobook by an insightful new literary voice.

Very good
Revisado: 03-31-23
Lisa Jobs is an excellent writer and provides an interesting take on a genius who transformed our world.
I grew up in a different era (I learned to type on a manual typewriter!) Yet, I also grew up with a public father who acted one way to his adoring public and second family and another to his earlier family ( certainly nothing like the degree caliber of Steve Jobs). Yet, Lisa’s retelling of certain events, her angst and emotional pain transcended and resonated with my memories, touching childhood scars.
For those who grumble about the author’s whining: Be very grateful that you have never experienced this type of parental neglect.

Gorgeous story
Revisado: 03-13-23
I listen to children’s stories to help me sleep. This one is so gorgeous that I had to listen to it twice. I know that I will go back to it again and again. This is a heartwarming story about loss and grief and of a time long ago when Native Americans lived on the land.
