The creativity of the world building and conflict.
Revisado: 10-20-24
The reader is very good and well able to distinguish characters. He did justice to a masterful story. Carol Berg is definitely my favorite fantasy writer.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Great!

This may be the best audio book recording I’ve ever listened to. I had read the book, so there were no surprises other than how good the performance is. The included sound effects definitely enhanced the experience.

This was a murder mystery and a social commentary but not heavy handed. It was engaging and surprising. Loved it.

Cate Glass a.k.a Carol Berg is an outstanding fantasy writer. She leans more toward intrigue and less on incessant battles. Wonderful characters. I’ve read all of her novels.

Marvelous Fantasy
Revisado: 03-30-23
Carol Berg is one of my favorite fantasy writers. She is phenomenal at world building. Her stories are both complex, that is, not simplistic, and comprehensible. This first in a trilogy has a satisfying ending yet leaving the reader or listener eager to see what will happen in the next novel. The narrater is very good and brings life to the characters and the world.

Battle After Battle
Revisado: 08-30-22
As all in this series, there is a lot of battle, but it is blended with enough interesting story to keep you engaged. Kate Reading is an outstanding performer. I’d listen to any book she was reading.

Historia
Nestled in the heart of the Adirondacks, Miller's Kill, New York is about as safe as it gets. That's why Episcopal minister Clare Fergusson is shocked when the July Fourth weekend brings a rash of vicious assaults to the scenic town. Even Clare's good friend, police chief Russ Van Alstyne, is shaken by the brutality of the crimes - especially when it appears that the victims were chosen because they are gay.

Accurate and Decent Story
Revisado: 08-06-22
I read this book; this was a first-time listen. The reader is quite good. As for mysteries, it’s not her best but the characters are well-written. The social issues that the Episcopal Church has wrestled with are well-stated. If you are new to this series, and unfamiliar with the Episcopal Church, some of those have been resolved. One criticism of the reader, the word is crucifer not crucifier. The first is one who carries a cross in the worship service, the second is someone who nails and individual to a cross. Also, in the EC, the word is pronounced Ah-men not Ay-men.

Historia
Clare Fergusson, St. Alban's new priest, fits like a square peg in the conservative Episcopal parish at Miller's Kill, New York. She is not just a "lady"; she's a tough ex-Army chopper pilot, and nobody's fool. Then a newborn infant left at the church door brings her together with the town's police chief, Russ Van Alstyne, who's also ex-Army and a cynical good shepherd for the stray sheep of his hometown.

Female Fr. Brown?
Revisado: 07-29-22
I have read the series, and I really like it. As a woman Episcopal priest, I think that’s saying a lot. Listening, I had to get used to Claire’s Southern accent, but it is accurate. Just not what this Yankee hearted in her head.
