Step by Step Change of Thinking to Relieve Suffering
Revisado: 09-12-24
In the final 2 or 3 minutes of the epilogue, I was particularly moved by the insightful and well organized thought exercise for identifying and changing maladaptive thinking, which is apparently the root cause of my personal and destructive reactivity. While listening to the author's final pages, I was struck and inspired by my thought "I feel afraid [in a recurring scenario], and lashing out destroys connection. There's better strategies to encorage the appreciation I want." The identification of each separate strategy is a unique thought, without the baggage of suffering experienced in the subtly different process of "thinking" vs. "thoughts". It could take me awhile to fully grasp the nuance, and I'm looking forward applying the process in other areas.

Shivers
Revisado: 05-24-24
This detailed analysis of multiple styles of anger sent shivers through me. I felt a profound sense of relief when hearing the "Sneaky Anger" chapter. The authors' examples and explanations articulate my frustration when faced with passive aggression, and the consequential powerlessness I've felt countless times. I'm going to listen to this book many times, paying keener attention to my personal struggles with explosive rage - which often lights up in response to others' anger. I think my parents demonstrated the same dynamic I've reinacted in numerous partnerships. My mom says she didn't need to express anger, since my dad did it for her. I love them both, and we're all human. However, I want to get off this hamster wheel, and spend my time with more joy and creativity. I'm looking forward to implementing the advice and facing the uncomfortable truth within this amazing book.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Perfect for Solo Road Trip
Revisado: 06-03-21
Better than caffeine for my 17 hour solo road trip on a tight schedule. This audiobook kept me awake and alert on the road and out of the rest areas - eager to hear more after every sentence. The reader's voice is very pleasant, and it didn't lull me to sleep. The writing is extraordinary. It seems every word selection is exactly the right choice. Anyone can relate to the struggle from adolescence into adulthood, desire for family approval and the consequences or rewards in breaking from tradition. The author does a great job of balancing doubt and conviction throughout the story. Her family's dysfunction and the ensuing ambivalence are heartbreaking, yet thought provoking.

WOW!
Revisado: 06-12-19
I'm so impressed with the author's transformed outlook since writing Psychopath Free. This book very clearly explains how he progressed from the difficult early stages of awareness into mindfulness, acceptance and discovering tools to love oneself from within. It's inspiring and liberating to think we all possess the heart space required to protect ourselves from abuse and attract better associates, companions and partnerships... without hatred for those trespassers against us.

Hallelujah!
Revisado: 06-27-18
It took a lot longer to finish this audiobook compared with most of the science fiction material I enjoy. The content is enlightening, disturbing, and dense, with relatable advice and explanations. It's a priceless guide for anyone suffering from tick vector illnesses, with tremendous insight regarding alternatives to "business as usual" medical practice in America. After years of searching for professional medical help in all the wrong places, I finally learned specifically what type of practice to look for. I live in Atlanta, and I saw no less than 10 different medical professionals over the past 18 months. After reading just 25% of this book, I had appointments with the right people and my illness is currently being treated effectively. Each and every chapter in my progression toward finishing the book helped me to better understand the multiple medical tests required, the challenges in obtaining clear diagnoses and the language of treatment protocol.

If a man doesn't take you seriously, he may feel compelled to have a good time with you. Unfortunately this good time will last until you finally realize you're being taken for a ride or until Mr. Time Waster ultimately moves on to a woman he REALLY wants. In cases like this, what a woman really requires are two things: a healthy amount of self-respect and a set of "player-proof" dating rules that will allow her to make wise dating decisions.

Giving Is Not Receiving - Gift Taken For Granted
Revisado: 06-25-15
I'm awestruck! Even though I'm educated and intelligent, I almost never read. I tore through this book with record breaking speed. At the fine age of 45, I expect implementing the lessons learned in this book will change my life. I have always easily attracted men. Unfortunately, I allowed them to choose me. Recent experiences with predators drove me into depths of depression and soul searching. I am so glad this book was recommended to me, and I'm eager to share the ideas and lessons with women everywhere.
