Historia
In Unfamiliar Fishes, Sarah Vowell argues that 1898 might be a year just as crucial to our nation's identity, a year when, in an orgy of imperialism, the United States annexed Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Guam, and invaded Cuba and then the Philippines, becoming a meddling, self-serving, militaristic international superpower practically overnight. Of all the countries the United States invaded or colonized in 1898, Vowell considers the story of the Americanization of Hawaii to be the most intriguing.

Not captivating
Revisado: 12-02-15
I learned few things about Hawaii, author reading the book was articulate and understandable, but I felt as if I was at the funeral and it was an ode to a dead monarchy Hawaii was. I rarely do these reviews, and maybe it's best that way, but this time I had to. The guest speakers were not as legible as the narrator and they spoke a word only here and there, or few sentences at most, a bit annoying and child like theatrical presentation.
The subject only interested me mildly, since my son went to their honeymoon to the islands last month, and I'd like to go to visit too. Now I feel bad what happened to native population and fear that it will be like going to Disneyland.

Pretty good pep talk and advice
Revisado: 08-13-15
Nothing I didn't know, but it becomes validated and reinforced hearing it from a practitioner of the advice. I'm glad it wasn't any longer so I could go and listen again without wading through lot of filler material. Thank you!

The first insider account of the work at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, the discovery of the Higgs particle - and what it all means for our understanding of the laws of nature. The discovery of the Higgs boson made headlines around the world. Two scientists, Peter Higgs and François Englert, whose theories predicted its existence, shared a Nobel Prize. The discovery was the culmination of the largest experiment ever run, the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider.

Muddled through
Revisado: 08-12-15
Learned few things, I would have never known. Technical stuff like jargon, and layman explanation of complex scientific research and measurement methods. A fast paced thriller, I'm kidding here, I wish there was more philosophical and practical application, but it's not fiction so. Not too bad a listen for a documentary.

In good taste and engaging. Not very involved and very unbelievable, fairy tale. A clash between conventional and kinky lovemaking, in a smooth stylish prose. Nothing heavy or philosophical here.

Historia
It is a tale of ghosts, of madness, of revenge - of old alliances giving way to new intrigues. Denmark is changing, shaking off its medieval past. War with Norway is on the horizon. And Hamlet - son of the old king, nephew of the new - becomes increasingly entangled in a web of deception - and murder. Beautifully performed by actor Richard Armitage ("Thorin Oakenshield" in the Hobbit films), Hamlet, Prince of Denmark takes Shakespeare’s original into unexpected realms, reinventing a story we thought we knew.

Good listen!
Revisado: 05-30-15
Authors took liberty with many aspects of the story in a creative way, and made it into a fascinating thriller. It is not a simple reiteration, but a story with imp lex narrative and description, less philosophy.

Designers Don’t Read is a love song to graphic design and graphic designers. Austin Howe is a creative director, writer, advocate, and cheerleader for design - but not a designer. He believes in the "wonder and exuberance of someone who gets paid - by clients to do what he loves". Howe places immense value on curiosity and passion to help designers develop a point of view, a strong voice. He explores the creative process and conceptualization, and delves into what to do when inspiration is lacking.

Historia
In the heart of America, a metropolis is quietly destroying itself. Detroit, once the richest city in the nation, is now its poorest. Once the vanguard of America’s machine age - mass production, automobiles, and blue-collar jobs - Detroit is now America’s capital for unemployment, illiteracy, foreclosure, and dropouts. With the steel-eyed reportage that has become his trademark and the righteous indignation that only a native son can possess, journalist Charlie LeDuff sets out to uncover what has brought low this once-vibrant city, his city.

Difficult subject to write about and make interest
Revisado: 01-22-15
I lived in hamtranick for six months as a young 14 year old, then my parents moved to suburbs. My father worked in Chrysler. The demise of the inner city of Detroit being in news every once in a while, all this sparked an interest in wishing to find out what's really going on. Charlie has made the subject interesting by making it a personal story we can have compassion with the gory realities that happen to real people, husbands, wives, daughters, etc.
the story jumps around a lot and can be difficult to follow, characters are not really develop and they don't interact and cause stuff, it was almost a long drawn eulogy for the dying city and the dead.
Although the whole book is a tirade of his anger at city officials and others, and what's happening, in the end we learn what will help to change the situation. I endured the tirades, but the message should spur one to go and do something!
The narrator had this urgency about him, reading as if he had an appointment to keep and was rushin. It was clear and intonation even, so at least I understood every word said. I would listen to this narrator again.

Vaguely familiar
Revisado: 04-22-12
What did you love best about 1Q84?
Is it science fiction, phantasy or a bit of both? Perhaps it is philosophy in disguise of either or both. Story is unique, and somewhat familiar. I think Haruki may have used an older story line and dressed it up. He does have tendency to repeat himself, but when he does is to bring something new or to add another twist to it. Isn't life like that? Novel is long and dragged out. It does carry you on and there is a mystery that gets revealed painstakingly slowly, and by the time it does I didn't even care, I was so mesmerized by the whole thing not to even care. By that time I was immersed in the reality and trying to figure out how did it inspire this work.
Listening to this work made me get a book on history of philosophy, which enlightened to me some of the far fetched images Haruki introduces. This made it interesting and I wish the book wasn't that long I would like to listen to it in a condensed form which retains some of the main storie lines. Wonder if we could get that version.
If you???ve listened to books by the authors before, how does this one compare?
I like his short stories better. This novel doesn't really use it's size to develop the saga it could do. Instead it mulls and rehashes the same precepts as if we needed to be reminded or that it is important, which isn't really in the perspective of the whole novel.
What about the narrators???s performance did you like?
It was a good listen. I didn't have any problem with it.
If you could rename 1Q84, what would you call it?
Title does not really inspire me to want to read it. The reference to 1984 is really not supported since it does not develop new society, it is suggested that what happens it is personal and psychological and relevant to only few.
I would call it "Two moons". This title would suggest scifi, phantasy and psychology, and discovery would be that philosophy is interwoven and plays a role in the story line. And in the end it is romance and relationships that are of a mystery to be decoded, which Haruki is really trying to do.
Any additional comments?
I was under its spell for a week while driving cross country. It is easy to listen and deceptively easy to understand, but it does not give you any answers on how to live life. There are few jems hidden and it is worth listening to.
