Great read for adults and young people
Revisado: 09-06-22
I loved this book! It is easy to read and so insightful into the feelings and emotions of a young person grappling with their identify. You felt the frustration, disappointment and joy Melissa felt as she went through this stage of her life. And the FAQ at the end read by the author at the end was a fantastic bonus at the end.

Beautiful book, but hard to read
Revisado: 07-16-22
This book is beautifully written, tells an important and often overlooked story, but is very violent and hard to get through. The tough parts I listened to at a faster speed. When I was about to give up, I read some reviews of the book and interviews with the author and this helped me appreciate the story so much more and want to finish it. I am so glad I did.

Historia
Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking and relating to two children, no matter how adorable, Patrick is, honestly, overwhelmed. So when tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick's brother has a health crisis of his own, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian.

Great summer read for pride month!
Revisado: 07-04-22
My bookclub read this book during Pride
month and I just loved it! Fun summer vacation read, great narrator and it made me feel like I was doing something in recognition of Pride month. And although it was light, it also had some depth to it, especially around how adults and children handle loss of a loved on and the grieving process. I definitely recommend this book.

Historia
In the village of al-Awafi in Oman, we encounter three sisters: Mayya, who marries after a heartbreak; Asma, who marries from a sense of duty; and Khawla, who chooses to refuse all offers and await a reunion with the man she loves, who has emigrated to Canada. These three women and their families, their losses and loves, unspool beautifully against a backdrop of a rapidly changing Oman, a country evolving from a traditional, slave-owning society into its complex present. Through the sisters, we glimpse a society in all its degrees.

It sticks with you
Revisado: 11-19-21
I am torn on what to rate this book - it could be a 4 or 5. It is an unsettling book and I am not sure I like the story that much. However, the stories stick with you and I am still haunted by it. There is this undercurrent of gender-based violence throughout, but it’s sort of hidden and not in your face - much like it is in society really. But if you have experience with that you may find this book triggering. I do like that it is in Oman and the author is Omani - which I don’t think there are many books and authors out there from this country and it gives you a glimpse of what it’s like there now and had been in the past, which is interesting. The book has so many characters and jumps around between them and time frames, it can be hard to follow. But the narrator did an excellent job and I was able to follow it.

Ok read
Revisado: 07-04-21
I’ve been going to Fripp Island for 40 years and are from WV so I was curious about this book. Although we stayed in one of the smaller condos-not the big houses as described. The story is just ok - a good and easy summer read. Although there is no diner on the island or magnolia grove, I wish there was.

Untold story
Revisado: 04-29-19
I love history and Hillary Huber as a narrator - and the length was perfect for an easy listen if you've just finished a long book. Although it is the story of a finite time in her life - while she was at university and when she met Pierre Curie. I felt like the ending was rushed and I wanted to hear and learn more. I felt like there was more to tell, but for 1h15 minutes you can't go wrong with selecting this for your free Audible Original.

Carolyn's not so different from the other human beings around her. After all, she was a normal American herself once. Weird Fantasy
Revisado: 04-29-19
We read this for my book club and we all enjoyed it. Although, the first 90 pages or so (until Erwin is introduced) are a bit hard to get through, but after that I couldn't stop listening. It's nothing like I've read before - not quite fantasy but also not your average fiction. There are points where I had to take some pauses because it was violent - but I would go back minutes later to find out what happened. It makes you think, cringe and be on the edge of your seat.

Historia
Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surêté du Québec and his team of investigators are called in to the scene of a suspicious death in a rural village south of Montreal. Jane Neal, a local fixture in the tiny hamlet of Three Pines, just north of the U.S. border, has been found dead in the woods. The locals are certain it’s a tragic hunting accident and nothing more, but Gamache smells something foul in these remote woods, and is soon certain that Jane Neal died at the hands of someone much more sinister than a careless bowhunter.

Even better than the book
Revisado: 01-20-19
I am so glad I got the audio book version of Becoming. It’s moving, thoughtful and well written and having it read by Michelle Obama makes it even better. I was sad when it finished and she was no longer my daily companion on my commute. There was so much I didn’t know about her childhood, life and accomplishment as FLOTUS that I appreciated learning as well.
