Historia
Mike Campbell was the lead guitarist for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers from the band’s inception in 1976 to Petty’s tragic death in 2017. His iconic, melodic playing helped form the foundation of the band’s sound, as heard on definitive classics like “American Girl,” “Breakdown,” “Don’t Come Around Here No More,” “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” “Learning to Fly” and “Into the Great Wide Open.”

Wide open.
Revisado: 03-25-25
I’ve always loved Mike Campbell as a guitarist. But this glimpse into him as a man shows that he is a wildly talented and deeply sensative committed friend, bandmate, and husband. Great perspective into one of America’s best-ever bands.

Historia
Over the fifty years that Lorne Michaels has been at the helm of Saturday Night Live, he has become a revered and inimitable presence in the entertainment world. He’s a tastemaker, a mogul, a withholding father figure, a genius spotter of talent, a shrewd businessman, a name-dropper, a raconteur, the inspiration for Dr. Evil, the winner of more than a hundred Emmys—and, essentially, a mystery. Generations of writers and performers have spent their lives trying to figure him out, by turns demonizing and lionizing him.

Historia
Derek Taylor's iconic memoir is a rare opportunity to be immersed in one of the most whirlwind music sensations in history: Beatlemania. As Time Goes By tells the remarkable story of Taylor's trajectory from humble provincial journalist to loved confidant right at the center of the Beatles' magic circle. In charming, conversational prose, Taylor shares anecdotes and reminiscences so vivid and immediate that you find yourself plunged into the beating heart of 1960s counterculture.

Distracting
Revisado: 03-08-25
I love Derek Taylor’s words. He’s an interesting and eccentric word stylist. It’s a shame that the reader of this book didn’t take five minutes to research Derek Taylor’s eloquence, speaking style. Instead, he delivers the entire book in a strange, clipped, odd accent. That really distracts from the flow of the words on the page. Pity.

Historia
In this intimate and open account—nothing like any rock-and-roll memoir you’ve ever read—Alex Van Halen shares his personal story of family, friendship, music and brotherly love in a remarkable tribute to his beloved brother and band mate. In his rough yet sweet voice, Alex recounts the brothers’ childhood, first in the Netherlands and then in working class Pasadena, California, with an itinerant musician father and a very proper Indonesian-born mother.

Brotherly love.
Revisado: 10-27-24
By no means is this the full Van Halen saga. But it does tell the story of two brothers who formed a band that became very popular. Not a single message mention of Sammy Hagar, which makes me wonder if it’s out of spite, or legality.

Historia
This book helps listeners hear how George Harrison shaped the sound of The Beatles and how he carried that sound forward into his solo career Within You Without You is a highly personal exploration of George Harrison's essential contributions to the Beatles and his solo work, as well as his significant role as a Western proponent of Indian music and beliefs. Through close examination of his guitar playing in the Fab Four and his songwriting both in and out of the Beatles, author Seth Rogovoy demystifies the enigma of this most reluctant of rock stars.

This is a fine resource for someone relatively new to the music of George and The Beatles. It’s a deeper dive into some of the more popular songs, but not quite delivering anything new to deep fans.

Historia
There is a common belief that we live in unprecedented times, that people are too sensitive today, that nobody objected to the actions of actors, comedians, and filmmakers in the past. Modern pundits would have us believe that Americans of a previous generation had tougher skin and seldom complained. But does this argument hold up to scrutiny? In Outrageous, celebrated cultural historian Kliph Nesteroff demonstrates that Americans have been objecting to entertainment for nearly two hundred years, sometimes rationally, often irrationally.

Well-researched historical list
Revisado: 12-31-23
More than an actual story or historical weaving, Cliph does a fine job of listing a (more or less) chronological history of primarily showbiz-related scandals. Envelopes were pushed, lines were crossed, and palms were greased throughout history. Proving that nothing has changed, and not much about human nature will change. Red vs Blue, us vs them, good vs evil will never cease. Good book. Know your history and know the villains. This book can help identify who’s who.

Historia
Malcolm Evans, the Beatles’ long-time roadie, personal assistant, and devoted friend, was an invaluable member of the band’s inner circle. A towering figure in horn-rimmed glasses, Evans loomed large in the Beatles’ story, contributing at times as a performer and sometime lyricist, while struggling mightily to protect his beloved “boys.” He was there for the whole of the group’s remarkable, unparalleled story: from the Shea Stadium triumph through the creation of the timeless cover art for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and the famous Let It Be rooftop concert.

Revisado: 12-02-23
Poor Mal. No real surprises or revelations in this straight-forward telling of the life of the man who served tea, carried amps, and restrung guitars for the greatest band of the 20th century.
You can’t write a hero’s tale of everyone, and Mal’s no acception. He was simply a good bloke who, according to literally everyone quoted in this book, was a “gentle giant”.
If you see Mal’s life through the eyes of a music fan, Mal was in the right place at the right time. Seen through the eyes of his wife and kids, Mal’s lucky break broke their homelife in two.
As ever, mixing drugs, booze, and guns never plays out well.

The biography McCartney rightly deserves.
Revisado: 02-12-23
Beautifully performed by Simon Vance, this audio version of this meticulously researched and well-written detailing of McCartney’s initial steps outside the eye of the Beatle hurricane reveals fresh insights for even the most die-hard fan.
Kozinn and Sinclair combine their talents to touch on all the minutia we want when reading Beatles-related books in this post-Lewishon world. I especially appreciated the studio notes, detailing the session dates and the work completed and by whom. Peppered with deeply mined quotes - rather than the run of the mill comments - as well as a sprinkling of music criticism and analysis, make this a satisfying endeavor. (Some cynics may wonder why the authors chose to devote so many pages to Give Ireland Back to the Irish, but I loved every bit of it, remembering that this release was more than just a footnote for Macca at the time. Here, it gets the attention it deserves, at last.)
More a feast than a mere appetizer, this “volume one” leaves us hungry for more.
Let’s hope to see the next volume soon.
