Represented here are 16 short stories by seven great American writers, dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. Different in atmosphere and writing style, they nevertheless caught the mood and concerns of the day in a way that was distinctly American.

Any additional comments?
I am not typically one to sit and read full length classics, but these short stories are very enjoyable and make road trips fly by! Some of them are quite amusing. I would find myself "taking a drive" just to listen to one of the stories. Great writing from a bygone era!!

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Great subject, good writer....a chapter and a half in and I can't take anymore. Profanity ruins this book. Very disappointed.

Historia
Tyrel Sackett was born into trouble but vowed to justice. After having to kill a man in Tennessee, he hit the trail west with his brother Orrin. Those were the years when decent men and women lived in fear of Indians, rustlers, and killers, but the Sackett brothers worked to make the West a place where people could raise their children in peace. Orrin brought law and order from Santa Fe to Montana, and his brother Tye backed him up every step of the way. Till the day the job was done, Tye Sackett was the fastest gun alive.

Transition in the Sackett Novels
Revisado: 02-21-17
Any additional comments?
To me, this novel marks a transition in the Sackett series. A transition from Frontier to "Old West". Well written as always, I am always amazed at the philosophical depth in in L'Amour's writing.

Great Account of a Nation in Transition
Revisado: 05-24-16
Any additional comments?
Ellis did a great job at narrating the transition from confederation to nation. This book provides insight into the minds of the founders as they sought to establish a nation that would last and government that would protect the freedoms and rights of its citizens. This was my introduction to Ellis' work and I look forward to delving into more of his writing.

“I am Johannes Verne, and I am not afraid.” This was the boy’s mantra as he plodded through the desert alone, left to die by his vengeful grandfather. Johannes Verne was soon to be rescued by outlaws, but no one could save him from the lasting memory of his grandfather’s eyes, full of impenetrable hatred. Raised in part by Indians, then befriended by a mysterious woman, Johannes grew up to become a rugged adventurer and an educated man. But even now, strengthened by the love of a golden-haired girl and well on his way to making a fortune in bustling early-day Los Angeles.

A Great Read/Listen!
Revisado: 11-30-15
Any additional comments?
As someone who has read only a couple Louis L'amour books, I found this book immensely enjoyable. Not just a shoot 'em up and leave 'em for dead type books, but a story woven with mystery and questions of life and death. I found the book to be deeply philosophical as well and through it saw that L'amour's love of knowledge and books. Beside that, definitely a thrilling page turner with its fair amount of shooting!

Historia
With the sweep and vitality of a great novel, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough presents the enthralling story of John Adams. This is history on a grand scale - an audiobook about politics, war, and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Read by History Channel host Edward Herrmann!

I see, in John Adams, tremendous virtue. More so, in my opinion, than other founding fathers. David McCullough's portrayal of his life and death give us a glimpse into the foundational principles of our nation.

Historia
In this stirring audiobook, David McCullough tells the intensely human story of those who marched with General George Washington in the year of the Declaration of Independence, when the whole American cause was riding on their success, without which all hope for independence would have been dashed and the noble ideals of the Declaration would have amounted to little more than words on paper.
