Historia
May Sarton's parrot chatters away as Sarton looks out the window at the rain and contemplates returning to her "real" life - not friends, not even love, but writing. In her bravest and most revealing memoir, Sarton casts her keenly observant eye on both the interior and exterior worlds. She shares insights about everyday life in the quiet New Hampshire village of Nelson, the desire for friends, and need for solitude - both an exhilarating and terrifying state.

Full of Wisdom and Beauty
Revisado: 04-25-23
Although likely not for everyone, I love Journal of a Solitude. I've read it twice in hard copy and recommended it to friends. I am a woman of similar age who lives alone on land. I find her thoughts and observations moving and relevant. Written in 1973 by a prolific poet, author and retired professor there are more differences in our lives than similarities and yet her words speak to me. I love this book and hope you enjoy it too.

Historia
Pip Appleby seems to have it all, with her prestigious job as a human rights lawyer and her enviable London home. But then a tragic accident stops her life in its tracks, and in an instant everything changes. Retreating to her family’s rural farm and the humble origins she has been trying to hide, Pip is haunted by what she has done. When she discovers the diary of actress Evelyn Mountcastle in a box of old books, Pip revels in the opportunity to lose herself in someone else’s life rather than focus on the disaster that is her own. But soon she sees parallels....

Not Great
Revisado: 07-21-22
A lovely reading voice but a weak story. It requires very little of the reader.

Historia
It’s 1929 in New York City. In an apartment high above Lexington Avenue, the painter Georgia O’Keeffe feels stuck. At 42, she should be at the apex of her powers as an artist, and yet something is missing. Her husband - the gallerist Alfred Stieglitz, who helped build her reputation in the art world - has grown needy and insecure, not to mention unfaithful. More than this, her work has lost its fire, and she knows it. The calla lilies and poppies for which she is revered now seem careful, predictable.

Love Georgia, love this.
Revisado: 03-22-22
Love Georgia, love this short creative nonfiction and loved Cynthia Nixon's reading. The imagery and notions of what Georgia was thinking were beautiful. I also greatly appreciate the supporting female characters.

Historia
Just Kids begins as a love story and ends as an elegy. It serves as a salute to New York City during the late 60s and 70s and to its rich and poor, its hustlers and hellions. A true fable, it is a portrait of two young artists' ascent, a prelude to fame.

Extraordinary.
Revisado: 03-14-22
Patti Smith is an extraordinary writer Just Kids is intimate and honest. This account of two lives, radically different from my own life, offered insite into a world of great fascination. The relationship between Smith and Mapplethorpe is inspirational in its commitment, devotion and deep love. I loved it when I read it and listening to Smith tell the story is even better.
