Historia
In the snowbound city of Kiev, wry and bookish history student Mila Pavlichenko organizes her life around her library job and her young son—but Hitler’s invasion of Russia sends her on a different path. Given a rifle and sent to join the fight, Mila must forge herself from studious girl to deadly sniper—a lethal hunter of Nazis known as Lady Death. When news of her three hundredth kill makes her a national heroine, Mila finds herself torn from the bloody battlefields of the eastern front and sent to America on a goodwill tour.

Unforgettable!
Revisado: 06-12-24
Simply marvelous all around. Beautifully narrated, gripping plot, well developed characters, mostly true history, only a little fiction to fill in gaps in the historical record.

Historia
Growing up on a farm in Ohio, George always preferred being outdoors and exploring. This made school a challenge, but his hunting, fishing, and trapping skills helped put food on his family's table. As a poor teenager living in a rough area, he got into regular brawls, and he found holding down a job hard because of his wanderlust. After working out West with the CCC, he decided that joining the Marines offered him the opportunity for adventure plus three square meals a day; so he and his brother joined the Corps in 1941.

The grim reality of war and the contrasting moments of hilarity amidst the fighting.
Revisado: 12-24-23
A very realistic accounting of the day to day struggles of combat, the surprising lengths of time that Marines were on the line, the appalling inadequacy of the training of replacements late in the war in contrast to the superb training that the author and his contemporaries received, etc. This is a book that is better read than learned about in reviews.

Historia
In 1942, Norman Hanson learned to fly the Royal Navy's newest fighter: the US-built Chance Vought Corsair. Fast, rugged, and demanding to fly, it was an intimidating machine. But in the hands of its young Fleet Air Arm pilots, it also proved to be a lethal weapon. Posted to the South Pacific aboard HMS Illustrious, Hanson and his squadron took the fight to the Japanese. Facing a desperate and determined enemy, Kamikaze attacks, and the ever-present dangers of flying off a pitching carrier deck, death was never far away.

Authentic
Revisado: 12-16-22
Even the narration of this personal memoir seemed like it might be the humble author himself speaking of what he had lived. The narration was very occasionally hesitant but it’s speed and accent were right on! The only glitch that I as an elderly American heard was in the miss pronunciation of the last name of the great American boxing phenomenon, Joe Louis. The narrator pronounced it as Loo-ee giving it the proper pronunciation for a French name. In America and around the world in boxing circles, Joe’s last name was and should be pronounced the same way as an American would pronounce the name “Lewis.”

A novel for our times
Revisado: 07-21-22
Built around issues of political transformation from democracy to autocracy, pro-choice vs pro-life, abortion, human rights and their removal by political forces and the potential for the resurgence of eugenics as we struggle with the issues of gene editing to produce “super babies and children,” this book hits home!

Historia
Sixteen year-old Katya Spivak is out for a walk on the gracious streets of Bayhead Harbor with her two summer babysitting charges when she's approached by silver-haired, elegant Marcus Kidder. At first, his interest in her seems harmless, even pleasant, like his name - a sort of gentle joke. His beautiful home, the children's books that he's written, his classical music, the marvelous art in his study, his lavish presents to her. But by degrees, almost imperceptibly, something changes.

A charming fairytale
Revisado: 06-05-22
A 16 yo summertime nanny on the Jersey Shore meets a wealthy 68 yo artist and children’s book author. As the plot develops, it’s revealed that the meeting was not by chance and that the man wishes for the girl to become his bride and assist him in terminating his life which will end soon anyway due to advanced cancer. Throughout the courtship the girl resists and the man persists finally gaining the girl’s acquiescence when she recognizes that he’s the only one who truly loves her. The story is well written and engaging with a fantastic quality about it that’s reminiscent of a fairytale. The narration is excellent. I highly recommend this work by a famous author to anyone who seeks and appreciates good entertainment.
