Not Alice Hoffman

I bought this book because I had read several others compare this Author to Alice Hoffman. Not even close. It was an okay enough story until about mid point when it veered into the ridiculous. The "suspension of disbelief" required to maintain interest is utterly unreasonable. A tree that throws apples? Really?? That's just the tip of the iceberg of silliness contained within. The graphic domestic violence and sexual content rules out children's book, although some of it was more suggestive of that genre than adult literature. Wish I had taken a pass.

I've enjoyed this author before, but this is just insipid. Slow, boring, unrealistic - I only cared about 1 character in the entire book and that didn't justify spending 8 more hours of my life listening. Ugh.

I was super disappointed in myself for spending so much time hoping this book would get better and for not just throwing in the towel many hours before. Unfortunately, I stuck it out to the end. It was convoluted, not believable and just plain irritating. As someone who has experienced a controlling relationship, parts were just painful to listen to. If you have been fortunate enough to have previously listened to really good psychological thrillers/mysteries, then this is NOT for you. Ugh.

I very good friend had lent me her audio CD of Brene' Brown's Braving the Wilderness (which is awesome), so I wanted to listen to another of her works. I actually bought the hard cover so that I would be able to re-read and highlight passages, that's how much I loved it.

Unfortunately, the narration on this one is just so jarringly dissimilar that I'm not really liking the book or getting much out of it. It's like the narrator has no clue of content and is just inappropriately flying through the material. This is a major disappointment.

I continue to go back and listen to this amazing book from time to time. The message is spot on. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Wonderful.

I'm not sure if this book is just not very good or if the narration adds to the tedious nature. It took me forever to become interested in any of the characters, but now that I am about 2/3 finished listening, I find that none of them are very interesting and the dialogue is just awful. The attention to minutia is just unparalleled. The whole scenario over Melissa and her son and his dating a 13 year old - OMG - it just went on and on. It kind of killed any further interest I may have had. t's just painful to listen to at this point. I love Joanna Trollope, but this is not one of her better efforts.

I had just finished listening to Tears to Triumph by Marianne Williamson and liked it so much that I wanted to try another by her. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware that large parts of this book were compiled from seminar(s) she had conducted in front of an audience which makes the book feel disjointed although I do admit there are some real great gems of information presented here. She has a calm, reassuring voice in Tears to Triumph, but here I felt that I was being shouted at as she projected her voice for the audience and it was quite unpleasant. I tried adjusting my speakers to mitigate the shrill audio, to small effect. She also repeats herself several times because this is a hodgepodge of different presentations mixed with some of her own audio. It might come off better in book form, this was disappointing and became a trial to finish.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I have no idea

What was most disappointing about Tom Perrotta’s story?

The jarring language. I'm not a a prude, but I found the language just a real turn off. I had to stop listening, I found it obnoxious and not entertaining.

Which scene was your favorite?

N/A

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

No

Couldn't stop listening to this. So grateful to have found a great author and terrific narrators. I know it's cliche, but this kept me guessing right up to the end. Reminds me of Ruth Rendell who is my absolute favorite. Loved every minute.

Would you try another book from Sarah Pinborough and/or the narrators?

Would not listen to another book from this author, although I thought the narrators did a good job.

What was most disappointing about Sarah Pinborough’s story?

The ending. Awful. Words cannot adequately describe how much I despised it. I invested a lot of time into this audiobook, although it became more and more far fetched as it went on, but I've got to say out of the thousands of books I have read and/or listened to, this one takes the cake on totally blowing the ending. I don't know if it's sick, twisted, totally beyond belief or a combination of all three, but I was indescribably disappointed. Ick. The last bit about finding a way to get rid of the child is beyond despicable.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

All three.

Any additional comments?

Don't fall for the hype. Sooo sorry I did.
