Why did the flushing toilet take two centuries to catch on? Why did medieval people sleep sitting up? When were the two "dirty centuries?" Why did gas lighting cause Victorian ladies to faint? Why, for centuries, did rich people fear fruit? In her brilliantly and creatively researched book, Lucy Worsley takes us through the bedroom, bathroom, living room, and kitchen.

Engaging and Entertaining!
Revisado: 11-22-24
I loved this! It’s incredibly informative, breaking down the functions of rooms in the house and how they’ve changed and evolved over the years. While a little dated now, it’s still a font of historical knowledge. The writer doesn’t just give us facts and dates, she engages the reader with anecdotes and fun stories.
This very much feels as if you’re sitting in a living room with a good friend.

Historia
Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

Historia
In 2007, Dr. Martin MacNeill - a doctor, lawyer, and Mormon bishop - discovered his wife of 30 years dead in the bathtub of their Pleasant Grove, Utah, home, her face bearing the scars of a facelift he had persuaded her to undergo just a week prior. At first the death of 50-year-old Michele MacNeill, a former beauty queen and mother of eight, appeared natural. But days after the funeral, when Dr. MacNeill moved his much younger mistress into the family home, his children grew suspicious.

Psychologically Frightening and Believably Real
Revisado: 10-19-24
As usual, Grant takes the technology of the near future and makes it look both real and achievable. Once there, she twists it into a frighteningly real perverse situation.
Dream and VR therapy twisted into a truly life and death experience, where it’s not guaranteed that the you that went into it, will be the you that returns.

Historia
In the summer of 1985, a brilliant young British DNA scientist Helena Greenwood is found murdered in her front garden in a quiet suburb in California. The police believe they know the killer’s identity but there’s no evidence against him, and the only thing linking him to the crime is the fact he’d been charged with sexually assaulting Helena just a few months previously.

A Deeply Personal Reexamination of a Cold Case
Revisado: 09-20-24
I loved the narrator, and the author was wonderful about sharing her experiences and emotions as she spends years tracing the science that may or may not have put an innocent man in jail.
My only complaint is that while personal to the author, the last 3 chapters could have been condensed. At times it felt incredibly drawn out with no real resolution. As this case is still being worked, I can only hope that there will be an updated chapter added for closure.

Historia
The salacious and scandalous murders of a series of couples on Texarkana's "lovers' lanes" created a media maelstrom and cast a pall of fear over an entire region. What is even more surprising is that the case has remained cold for decades. Combining archival research and investigative journalism, Pulitzer Prize-nominated historian James Presley reveals evidence that provides crucial keys to unlocking this decades-old puzzle.

Thorough and interesting
Revisado: 07-14-24
This is an incredibly thorough recounting of one of the lesser known serial killer cases.
The author has personal ties to both the location and persons involved, and yet maintains a dispassionate view of the events.
My only complaint is that the narrator’s voice is at times a bit dry, which makes for boring listening. However! The author has included interesting tidbits of knowledge that are obliquely relevant to the case; such as famous people who were born or lived at the time.

I really enjoyed the fact that while this is an anthology of the author’s previously printed articles from newspapers and magazines; he took the time and effort to inform readers of what fiction works they inspired, as well as updates on what has happened since publishing the original article.

As always this book is a romp! Full of fun and mystery, I enjoyed hearing the romance story from a male protagonist.
I found the ending to be a perfect blend of heartwarming and sweet while leaving room for the side characters to have their own adventures later.

Crimes That Changed Our World explores some of the most important trigger cases of the past century, revealing much about how change comes to our modern world. The exact nature of the crime-outrage-reform dynamic can take many forms, and Paul and Sarah Robinson explore those differences in the cases they present. Each case is in some ways unique but there are repeating patterns that can offer important insights about what produces change and how in the future we might best manage it.

Intense and Informative!
Revisado: 02-08-24
A good book, which details specific crimes and how they influenced the changing of laws and people’s attitudes towards crimes.
The writer is excellent, informative and fun.
The narrator is, unfortunately a bit monotonous and so parts of this book drag on.
However! This is the sort of book that is best read in small doses and digested slowly. Done this way, the narrator is not that troublesome.

I loved this. Bonnie made this an experience. You travel with her as she learns the life and history of Tokitae, one of the last killer whales in captivity.
With interviews, facts, and a sense of being surrounded by the culture of the Lummi people, I was moved deeply.
If you do not know of Tokitae before this book, I beg you to not wiki her until after you are done reading this. It will break your heart.
